Most of my work is split between my laptop and my desktop. I have nice models of both, and use the laptop only on the road, but when at home I love my desktop and the 21" screen. I have the broadband, wireless at home, and all that happy stuff. And the laptop goes on the network at home so it can grab updates, virus defs, and essentials.
What I am looking for is a product that will sync the My Documents folder of both machines each time one comes on my home network. I keep everything in this folder and am tired of shuffling USB sticks back and forth. Basically I want both to have the same docs.
I am not interested in online backups, docking stations, and other stuff...just a simple piece of software...or hack on how to make the above happen. Any suggestions, experiences, or advice?

A co-worker of mine just pointed out this little utility to me:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...o/synctoy.mspx
It's called "SyncToy". I haven't had a chance to try it out, but it might be a simple solution that addresses your needs.

I haven't seen the first link, but have been a folder share user for ages, and don't have a clue how I got by without it.
I use the free version, that works fine for me, and the laptop, desktop, and work machine all synch a couple folders to each other. I believe the free one is limited to two folders, but that can include as many sub folders as you have under there, so it's not really a limitation.
My documents, my organizer files, and a ton of other stuff synchs in the background whenever a change is made on one of the machines. The only issue, but it's not impossible to work around, is of course it can't synch a file open and saved on several machines at the same time.
It's so easy to just drop a file into the foldershare directory, and know it will be home when I get there, way before I get there.

keeping files in sync across the desktop/laptop/mobile
I need to keep files in sync between my desktop, laptop and mobile.
The desktop and laptop run linux debian. mobile is an android 2.3.
would appreciate suggestion how to go about this (software to use).
is there a setup which doesnt sync to an external "cloud", but just across the three devices (via some kind of a local network, so to speak)?.
TIA

I loved Windows Live Sync but MS chose to terminate it for the inferior SkyDrive in February. You could choose which folders to sync.
Cubby comes a close 2nd (have to pay for direct syncing though) as you can choose specific folders like Live Mesh. There's Mybox among many others but all of them need a specially-designated folder and not one of your choosing.

dropbox does have a linux option, but he wants a 'cloud-less' option.
you can use a web host, creating your own 'cloud' or run a webserver at home:

this might be more along what you are looking for (mobile is in beta):
