If you switch to ThunderBird M8 you can use OpenPGP and or PGP. I use it with a client who is paranoid and it works great.

I did a test with hushmail. The note I sent to myself [from my hushmail account to my commercial account] directed me to their site where I had to type in a know phrase to decrypt. I'd like the same type of protection for my laptop. Anyone know if this is possible.

The latest commercial version of PGP sw has whole disk encryption as part of the Pro suite. I've used it for over a year with no ill effects. Though, if you do forget your key, you're screwed.

Does it slow down your computer at all? How much does it cost?

Thanks!

No noticeable difference in performance. There's two prices: a yearly subscription and perpetual license for $79 & $179 respectively. They offer a 30-day free trial as well.
