Two Connexion Items

Last month, a Korean Air 747-400 received the 100th commercial installation of the Connexion by Boeing service.

From January 23, 2006, passengers on JAL aircraft equipped with the ‘JAL Inflight Internet Service’ provided by Connexion by Boeing, will be able to use their own wireless LAN compatible laptops to enjoy live global television during flight.

By logging onto the ‘JAL Inflight Internet Service’ from this date, passengers onboard JAL will be able to select from four television channels and view directly on their own laptop or notebook computers live news, financial and sport news-related content. The programming will be transmitted live by satellite by NBC Universal, Euronews, EuroSport SA and BBC World to all JAL aircraft equipped with the ‘JAL Inflight Internet Service’.

JAL passengers will be able to enjoy watching live global news provided by BBC World, CNBC global business news, and sports news provided by Eurosportnews. Regional news from EuroNews will also be available on aircraft traveling across all regions except the U.S. and Canada, where MSNBC will be offered. BBC World and CNBC content will change depending on where the aircraft is in the world, as the service will be able to link directly to American, European and Asian focused feeds. All content will be provided in English. Passengers must use their own headphones when listening to live global television.

Passenger can view live global television free-of-charge when they pay to access the ‘JAL Inflight Internet Service’. A new simplified more flexible pricing for the ‘JAL Inflight Internet Service’ will also come into effect on January 31, 2006 providing passengers with four options: 1, 2 and 3-hour Internet access at US$9.95, US$14.95 and US$17.95 respectively, and 24 hours unlimited access at US$26.95. Payment is by credit card.

The ‘JAL Inflight Internet Service’ is currently available to passengers in all classes on certain JAL aircraft serving five routes: Tokyo - London, Tokyo- New York, Tokyo- Paris, Tokyo- Moscow and Tokyo – Singapore. The airline will continue to expand this in-flight Internet connection service on other routes, notably on Japan-Europe and Japan-North America routes.

Constantly amazes me how cheap this service is. I've been in hotels that charge more for crappy internet service...
