My only concern with the Samsung would be support. Trying to get a notebook repaired internationally is a huge time-drain and quite expensive.

Overseas support can be an issue as well. The Q30 can be purchased from Dynamism for $2500, but that includes support. I was looking at purchasing the Q30 at MicroAnvika in London for about $1800 (excluding VAT). Here's a link: http://www.microanvika.com/product.a...O&PNO=SAM14502

There's a bit of a price premium over the Dell, but not overly so compared to Dynamism. I think all I'd need would be a new power adapter to accept US plugs.

Don't know about the price, because Averatec can be had for around $800, while the small Dells run over a grand

After much research (by my standards), I've decided that the best option for me would be the Dell Inspiron 700m. It's pretty heavy, compared to the Latitude, the Vaio, and the Fujitsu, but I rather liked it. I also found an online coupon for $750 off a Dell $1999+ laptop, so I couldn't resist. I bought the following, for $1262 (new, not refurbished):

Inspiron 700m
Intel Pentium M Processor 765(2.10GHz/400MHz FSB) 12.1-in WXGA
1GB DDR SDRAM 1 Dimm
60 GB 5400rpmHard Drive
Integrated Network Card
Internal 56K Modem
24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
Intel PRO/Wireless 2915 Internal Wireless (802.11 a/b/g, 54Mbps)
65 WHr 8-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
1Yr Ltd Warranty, 1Yr Mail-In Service, and 1Yr HW Warranty Support

Thank you very much for all your help!

BestBuy sells it.

Well, not really BestBuy, but their "concept" supa-dupa future store in Chicago.

I ASSUME it comes with some kind of warranty.

I really recommend the Fujitsu P7010. I think the keyboard is better than most other ultraportables, and it also has an internal DVD-RW drive which many ultra-portables lack.

lewinr, where'd you buy the P7010 and how much? Did you go straight through Fujitsu?

kanebear...I came this close to getting the very same P7020D just last week! It was a tough decision but I went with the just slightly heavier S7020D. It's still thin and lightweight and still has a fairly small footprint, but I really wanted the faster Intel Pentium M 760 (2 GHz) processor and some of the other bells and whistles it came with that the P7020D didn't have. Plus the full size keyboard. One of it's two slots is ExpressCard, so it's ready for that if that pans out to be necessary in the future. (And Bluetooth built-in )

I had worked on an less-featured S7010 before, so I was already used to the basic chassis and architecture. This S7020D is just a newer more powerfully featured version. I thinks it's a great "in-between" laptop for those that want a small, lightweight, low-power consumption laptop...yet don't want to give up some of the features and performance of a full sized laptop. It's not a "tiny"...but it's close. So far...I love it. Though I'm sure I would have loved the "P" too.

I'm a real Fujitsu fan. I like how they build them and their service is top-notch if you have a problem or question. I've never failed to get a knowledgeable and friendly tech support person (at the Tech Center in Memphis) on each call without ever waiting on hold. This is my 4th Fujitsu laptop in 10 years. And all 3 of the prior ones are still running well in hand-me-down heaven. Very generally they're not known for being the cheapest in price. But I think the extra money is worth it for the quality and service they bring to the table.
