For those in the know... what software do you prefer to get movies onto memorysticks for your PSP travellin' pleasure?

I'm starting to think about picking one up for my next transatlantic and I'd like to see how the software of choice works before commmiting $$$...

Just play Madden 06 in franchise mode. You won't even be to the playoffs before you land.

I had originally purchased a PSP for the same reason, but I found that the small screen and poor audio and a lack of a screen to be too bothersome to bare. I purchased an airline adaptor for my laptop. It has a much larger storage capacity than any memory stick with a larger screen and it can play any media I wish.

That being said there are some free apps that you can get, such as DVD Decrypter and PSP video 9. The easiest way would be to purchase Nero 7 Ultra. I believe that it has a quick converter for DVD to PSP.

dcrandall is right. Nero Recode (part of the Nero Ultra Suite) has complete support for DVD -> PSP. All you have to do is pop the dvd in, turn the PSP on in USB mode, fire up Nero Recode, do a couple o clicks and it encodes in movie in mpeg-4 and copies it to the memory stick.

Add in AnyDVD to defeat that pesky copy protection and you're all set.

Average 2 hour movie is about 675mb, so a 4gb or 8gb memory stick would be nice...

I thought the max Memory Stick Pro Duo was 2 gb? Can you use the larger capacity Memory Stick Pro on a PSP with some sort of adapter?

A free solution would be DVDdecrypter + Auto Gordian Knot.

I haven't actually got a PSP but use PQDVD's PSP Movie Creator on Windows for one-step conversion of DVD movies to PSP-friendly format and resolution. You have multiple options for quality of both video and audio, and I've found it converts a 22-minute TV episode in about 7 minutes (admittedly I have quite a powerful computer). I use it for converting TV shows on DVD into a format friendly with my 5G iPod. They now have a specific iPod version, but by the time they brought that out I'd already paid the $35 USD for the PSP version, and that works absolutely fine.

Some people balk at the idea of having to pay (gasp) for software, and there are freeware alternatives out there; however they are clunky and you often require more than one application (one to decode the DVD into a .vob file on your hard drive, and then another to do the conversion into MPEG4 while downscaling the resolution) to complete what should be a simple task. Basically, the old maxim applies: you get what you pay for.

PQDVD has got a demo for you to trial the software: it's limited so that it only converts the first five minutes (or so) of a DVD movie.

2gb for the MS pro duo is the max. We need a 4 or 8gb to make movies and the PSP effective.

Would Nero Recode 2, (which is the version I see when I access the Nero 7 Suite of products) when used in conjunction with AnyDVD allow me to burn compressed versions of protected DVD's onto my Vaio HD ?? I have used DVD Decrypter/DVD Shrink 3.2 but so far have only been able to get the size down to 2.X GB's.....

I haven't had any luck using AutoGK in conjunction with DVD Decrypter, was thinking that paying for a little S/W would be worth it if it were easy to use, fast and would allow me to either transfer files to a Memory stick or just to a HD....

Thoughts from the experts?? Thanks in advance!! Best wishes, Dave

I _am_ worried about how the screen size will hold up. Also about how awkward it might be to hold it while watching a film or two. But when I travel I really like to leave my laptop behind if I can. I figure it's worth a shot to see what it's like, so I've borrowed a friends PSP and picked up a memorystick. I'm currently trying a conversion using the DVD Decrypter/PSP Video 9 route which I'll be taking with me on my next flight. If I decide it's viable then I'll grab a PSP and start investigating the commercial products recommended here... for a one off I'll deal with the awkward-but-free. Thanks all!

some itesm

This is one of the better ones, no watching just insert DVD and come back 1.5 hours later

http://www.dvdcatalyst.com/

some others are xilisofot, and psp media manger. both for pay though. but, 9.99-18.99 for an app isn't bad

I use the following free programs:

DVD Shrink - to get the dvd down to 1/2 size
DVDx - Output to .avi
PSP Video 9 - get it to 368x208 (full screen PSP video) - 320x240 (reg format)

Haven't tried the new Nero yet, but using these, have gotten full length movies onto 512 mb sticks...THe Matrix on one and Legally Blonde on another.

Should work just fine. It'll compress down to just about any size/bitrate mpeg4 you want. Anydvd is awesome, their latest verson blocks sony's rootkit for audio cd's

Took a couple of films with me over the weekend and decided that while a nice feature to have if I were carrying the PSP for gaming anyhow, the screen is just a bit too small and the quality was just a bit to iffy too justify the cost as a dedicated video player.
So... sign me up as a believer of dcrandall's comments.

That said, I did develop a decent sized addiction to Hot Shots Open Tee golf, so one may be in my near future anyhow.

I bought the japanese version of this when the PSP came out over there. I now don't like playing the English version! I've learned how to play the Japanese version and some of the quirky sounds, music and character behaviors just aren't the same when translated to English.
