Nextel in Korea

When I was Korea last week I turned my nextel phone on just to get a phone number. I had service - in the sense that my bars were all the way up. It said No Service at first and then changed and then it said Nextel and STP or something along that line. I tried dialing for kicks and I got a Korean voice saying something. So I started wondering if I can unlock my phone and then put in another sim chip and start using it in Korea. Any thoughts?
