anyone notice the screen brightness getting dimmer (even at the max setting) over the first year?

You should be able to get the IBM card on ebay, or from ibm. But, if you/she is getting good throughput with the existing card then upgrading is not really going to improve speed much. Even an older B card is faster than any broadband connection, with a throughput of about 6-8mps in real world experience.

The G band would be nice, if one is going to do within network file transfers and such.
My T42 has the Intel 2200 card and I've had absolutely no problems with range or dropout problems...after I uninstalled IBM Access Connections and simply used Windows XP's network connections exclusively.

I'm also a big fan of the ThinkPad's 1400x1050 resolution on the 15" screen. Acres of real estate and easy to read. Don't know if the 14" screens with 1400x1050 resolution get possibly too small on text size, but the 15" screen is very nice.
