Pulled out the SIM and put in a prepaid TMobile SIM and sent the same message. It came back with a "Prepaid Service Error" message. They do seem to be blocking it.
I clicked on this thread to update that. Weird that it worked when I first got the phone but when my phone # was re-assigned from my old phone to my new one, it stopped working. Thought it may be related but it doesn't seem likely.

if it mean anything, www.synfonic.com is the same thing, but their replies are SO slow...
