ac-dc adaptor?

The adaptor (5.5v, 500ma) for my Tungsten E seems to have burned out and I need a new one. I thought I'd buy one at RadioShack, but they don't have any 5.5v adaptors. Would a 6v, 800 ma adaptor be close enough?

Check Frye's

the voltage part wouldn't worry me as much as the difference in the current.

I thought too many amps wasn't a problem. Is this incorrect?

Generally, a higher amperage rating on a power supply is not an issue, and definitely isn't in your case. Half a volt shouldn't be a problem either, but I'm not the organization that wrote your warranty

You can think of the amperage rating on a power supply such as the one you're looking to purchase as the maximum "flow" of electricity it will provide. The voltage is effectively the "pressure" at which it is delivered. The power supply won't deliver more current (amps) than the device draws.

An aside: Some cheap desktop computer power supplies will not supply a consistent voltage if the current draw is too low (or, of course, too high), however.

PalmOne wrote my warranty. 90 days. Followed by $25/call and $125 to fix anything. I'd prefer your warranty, terms unseen

thanks

$20 at RadioShack is cheaper than a $25 call to Palm.

That should be fine, just make sure that your new adaptor is a switching power supply (as opposed to a transformer-based one).

Please explain the difference. Both the new and old have very similar physical appearances and notations, although the new one says "class 2 transformer" and "regulated" while the old is silent on the subjects.

Well, the transformer-based ones are heavier and typically look like this: http://www.mower-magic.co.uk/acatalog/ac-adaptor_uk.jpg
Switching adaptors are much lighter; here is an example from the RS website: http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...Fid=273%2D1691
