Help with getting rid of MSN Messenger!

I normally use Trillian for all my IMs. However, I had to install MSN 7.0 to view my friends webcam. What happened after that was that the original MSN on my computer (4.7) got activated. And everytime I boot up my computer 4.7 runs and starts itself when I don't want it to start (i.e. don't want to be online).

I've gone into 4.7 and made sure the start when windows start option is OFF. I've also tried to remove it in the add/remove windows program. But it is still there and turning on. Any ideas on how to remove 4.7 permanently?

Run the following command from the "Run" box or a DOS prompt:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

I run it on all my computers and it is that last time I am bothered by Messenger.

There is also a cool site

www.wheresjames.com

Download their startup tool

It will show you EVERYTHING that starts when you start your computer ( there may be some surprises there ), and allow you to disable them

Thanks for the link to the WheresJames tool! Although I didn't find anything suspicious in there I like being able to clean stuff up every now and then for faster startups.

I've always wondered how to get rid of some of the stuff that I see in system tray or task manager. Thanks!

What he said. If the way that you are "supposed" to do it doesn't work (i.e. run the un-installer, run "Add/Remove Software" from the Windows menu), you should go in and remove the directories and files by hand. Deleting them will definitely get rid of it.
