Prepay German Sim - recommendations?

I'm in Germany for the best part of a week, and because I'm tight I'd like a German prepay sim for my UK tri-band cell (to control incoming call costs, not so bothered about outgoing).

So I want the cheapest option possible. I'm not concerned (particularly) about outgoing call costs. I'm not concerned about how long the minutes (of which I want as few possible) are valid for. Providing they don't expire before Sunday afternoon.

Any suggestions?

Don't know if this will fullfill your needs, but you could try the Liechtenstein (sic?) based www.riiing.com They have prepaid SIMs that "might" work for you....

Best wishes, Dave

That's an interesting service, but I don't think it's right for me (prices aren't competitive enough transatlantic).

I've poked around the web, but naturally all the sites are in German (not a language I speak). I think T-mobile has an offer here which is 19.95 to set you up on a prepay sim with 10 of credit... but I might be completely wrong...

I have a vodaphone card that works great. It was 15 euro with a 10 euro credit.

One piece of information I didn't have earlier: apparently T-Mobile has the best reception on the site where I'll be working. Any German speakers able to tell me if the link I'm looking at says what I think it does?

yeah, the only one cheaper is vodaphone, down to 15 euro for the SIM, I think with 5 Euro start. But, go with the t-mo, better service and connections, and the card is active in about five minutes.

A T-Mobuile sim card from the UK works in Germany. You use your UK phone number, and you can reup your card in the UK.

At local rates or silly roaming rates? I have a UK sim card with my orange account which works over here just fine, but my job involves a lot of people making pointless phone calls to me (I think they're pointless, they don't), so I end up getting stung on roaming charges. If I'm away for a period of time, I like to get a local prepay sim and leave a message on my regular phone saying "I'm away, but you can call me on this number". As I said, I'm tight...

The upshot was a T-Mobile prepay, 19.95 with a 10 credit, took about 45 minutes to activate. Haven't yet worked out what the answerphone prompts are...

I have the same vodaphone SIM card that I purchased back in November (it was called the 'CallYa Basic'). But I purchased it from the camera store at FRA (near the checkin counters) and he charged me 39.95 Euro for it! (it comes with 15 Euro credit and I get that nice tin box). Was I being ripped off? He couldn't get me the 15 Euro deal at all.

Another question - when I return to FRA later this year (since the SIM card is valid for 15 months after purchase or recharge) to recharge the card, where do I go to recharge this? Do I have to go to the Vodaphone store and buy vouchers or recharge cards? (I've never done this before, so any insights are greatly appreciated)

Thx in advance!

with roaming rates and you will have a UK number to attract your phonecalls. i think the best answer for your description is the german SIM. you will then have a german telefone number which will detract stupid calls because your callers are calling international, yes? hehe! i buy credit at local store with lufthansa visa credit card. on the credit card receipt is the XtraCash code that i enter to the phone and get credit so i get lufthansa miles for my small telephony with t-mobile D1. good arrangment i think.

That is indeed the philosophy. Although it also makes it easier (and cheaper all round) for the people with whom I'm working in Germany to contact me, so it's not purely selfish...

The link you provided no longer works. I'm no expert when it comes to cell phone plans, but at least I speak German.

Here's the deal (my translation):

If there's anything else I can do (I live in Germany), let me know by PM.

BTW: The website says: XtraCard now 20 cheaper! While supply lasts!

So, I guess the 19.95 is some sort of promotional deal, probably to match the competition.

@nmenaker: Versuche nur, zu helfen. Dachte, eine bersetzung knnte nicht schaden.

verstanden!

btw, it was 19.99 euro with 10 euro credit a year ago in february 2004, so I think the NEW PRICE is just marketing.
