Norway SIM info requested

My friend's son is headed to Oslo and other parts of Norway for 10 weeks.

I explained the magic of 900-1800 mHz and the whole of Europe.

I suggested getting an unlocked 900-1800 mHz GSM phone from a local Chicago retailer www.welectronics.com/gsm.shtml

But I'd like some suggestions from those that have purchased prepaid SIMs in Oslo.

How much should it cost?

Which carrier is preferred?

Where should the SIM be purchased?

Thanks for your help.

BTW, I could use the answers to the same questions for my trip to Paris next month.

The cheapest providers are www.tele2.no and www.chess.no (the price is about 1 NOK/min to Norwegian numbers and 8 NOK/min to the US). I think you have to order the SIM online from these providers. www.telenor.no and www.netcom.no are the two biggest providers. They are more expensive, but I think you will be able to buy their SIM from local mobile phone retailers. I would recommend Chess or Telenor. I know that one can buy Telenor refill cards at most kiosks/newsstands like Narvesen and 7-11. Im not sure about Chess, you might have to refill minutes online or by phone.

This is good, but... Despite my Scandinavian background, I can't translate the Norwegian websites!

Can anyone tell what the cheapest prepaid Norwegian SIM costs and how many domestic minutes of outgoing calls come with it?

Thank you.
