Just a stupid question: As you want to buy Autoroute, I gather that you want to take your laptop with you and will have internet access. Why buy a product when you have excellent route planners on the Internet that don't cost anything? Mymichelin.fr for example. Not only will they allow you to plan your routes but will also show you where good restaurants are as well hotels.
You also have the possibility of renting a car with Navigation system...
My two cents...

Have a good trip.

I can't speak for the OP, but for me offline route planners have my preference;

Online route planners don't work with GPS units
Online route planners require a pretty speedy internet connection, GPRS usually isn't enough

As for Autoroute/Streets and Trips; it also includes traffic information and is much faster than any online solution.

Autoroute is the way to go. Works excellent. Same goes for Streets & Trips (North America).

Since I always travel with my laptop I prefer to have access to maps so I can build and plan travel ahead of time.

While Streets and Trips is okay - it is alot better than paper maps - IMHO

Forget Streets and Trips

That software gives you the most complicated directions for the simplest of trips, even worse than mapquest.
Keep it simple go with some of the other choices!
