Wireless access allowed on planes

By GENARO C. ARMAS

WASHINGTON -- Federal regulators voted Wednesday to give airline passengers high-speed Internet connections while they fly.
The unanimous vote by the Federal Communications Commission means air travelers could be surfing the Web by 2006.

"If there is a theme for this meeting, it is that we want (new technologies) on the land, in the air, and on the sea" FCC Chairman Michael Powell said. "We are pushing the frontiers in order to bring the information age to all corners of the world."

The FCC also voted to solicit comments from the public about ending the ban on in-flight use of cell phones. Among the issues to consider are whether passengers want to be surrounded by cell phone conversations.

Thumbs down

"People who don't hesitate to talk in restaurants or other taboo venues will take their disrespectful attitudes with them to the skies and turn a once-quiet place of refuge into a noisy, office-like environment to the detriment of all." "Overuse of the devices, loud talkers and self-important businessmen who get a kick from showing off their power will turn our airplane cabins into intolerable chatterboxes, further removing, and perhaps eliminating, all the remaining vestiges of civility in air travel."

Think of just that one obnoxious person in the restaurant a few tables away from you talking incessantly and loudly into their cellphone......now imagine being surrounded by that rudeness....potentially for hours on end!!!!!

Wireless devices OK.....cellphones...please NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I don't get it. I have been using the Connexion by Boeing wifi internet access on Lufthansa since last July.....what's so special about it being allowed now??? Isn't that a tad late?

As for cellphones in flight.....No, No, No.....Plleeeeaaaaseeeeee no.....

On the other hand, a niche for a new cellphone-free airline.....

Imagine our cozy and quiet night flights once cells and VOIP are introduced.

There would be a real market for "quiet" airlines one would assume. I reckon
that being more restrictive with the well behaviour of passengers would be appreciated by most travellers. And limiting noise deems most important here.

FYI, from an email I received this morning:

Eyes are once again focused on transport safety, and the new target is airplane Wi-Fi, such as the Boeing Connexion service recently endorsed by United Airlines. As Wired News' Kevin Poulsen reports, Homeland Security analysts are afraid that onboard Internet access and Wi-Fi could be used to remotely set off explosives or coordinate terror attacks. It's not hard to imagine how the events of Sept. 11 could have been exacerbated by communication between the terrorists on each plane.

While officials aren't proposing to scrap the service, they do want the capability to tap into it immediately, and to identify users by name and seat number so they can be cut off if necessary. To prevent remote detonations, they want the cargo hull to be shielded from wireless signals, which may be a bigger stumbling block that significantly delays adoption of inflight Wi-Fi.

So far these are just proposals from the Justice Department, but given last week's tragic events in London, they are likely to be taken seriously.

Actually, it is hard to imagine. Everything went off "perfectly" as far as I can tell - being able to instant message with eachother and watch a little porn doesn't seem like it would be of much use.

There's a thread in Travel Saftey & Security about the proposal to allow the government to intercept and control Internet communications on planes.

I have used internet on SA and loved it, wish UA would get it on all their transpacific flights. I acxtually did used Apple iSight & iChat to talk with friends in AK and show them the interior of the plane.
Just flew MSP-DEN-SLC. Had a hold while taxi to the terminnal in DEN and they OKed cellphone use. INSANE. People calling and saying NOTHING. I think that in-flight cell phone use would be a (nother) big downward step in air travel.
Think use of wireless internet and VoIP is ok - cellphones a big mess.

Folks,
Airplanes. Already. Have. Telephones. Onboard...

If they wanted to, they could all call into a teleconference using the airphones and coordinate a 6-way simultaneous whatever.

Scare tactics...
