I used to have the old Adobe 5.something installed in my system. I chose to upgrade to the newer 6.01 version and was succesfull at downloading the thing. Now, I cant seem to configure it correctly, as files that I would previously open and Adobe would just react accordingly now just dont work that way..... and I get the 'open with' window and all that..... what am I doing wrong?

Can I configure Adobe to be the default opener for (some) files...? How do I do this? I downloaded the free version from the Adobe website, so I assume my product will have many limitations. Therefore, the configuration as default opener program could also carry some issues, or...?

Im (as usual) a little lost as to whats best for me in this case, so please feel welcome to throw some suggestions my way. Thanks!! ^

this method to manually tell Windows to use Adobe 6.0 for pdf files by default.

1. Select/click on the pdf file
2. File -> Open with -> Choose program
3. Select Adobe 6.0 if it shows up as a list

From this point on, windows should remember Adobe 6.0 as the pgm to run when you double-click on any pdf files.

If you still have any problems, I would un-install Adobe completely and re-install the new version again. The install should define the correct Adobe pgm to execute when you open a pdf file automatically.

Have you tried launching the new Adobe Reader 6 application once yet? Launch it directly from the start menu.

I did the same thing you did - upgraded Acrobat Reader 5 to the new Adobe Reader 6. All of the sudden, all of my .pdf files lost their association to the reader application. I found that launching Adobe Reader a first time completes the installation process. After this final step, everything fell back into place.

What tipped me off is that after I thought the installation process was complete, and I tried to double-click any .pdf...when the "choose program to use" dialogue box appeared, there was no Adobe Reader or Acrobat Reader listed as an available application.

Give this a try, and see if it helps you. Good luck.

I have had similar issues when upgrading Acrobat Free Reader. All were finally solved when I uninstalled all the Acrobat Readers, and then reinstalled only the current one.

Yes... I guess it would be a good idea to uninstall the old version... (kinda forgot to do that....)

It shouldn't be necessary to remove the old version, I've done dozens and dozens of them just over it without any problems.

You aren't getting the microsoft Journal Viewer error message are you when you try to open the files? That's a known problem with 6.x that is fixed by installing the newer journal viewer from the microsoft site.

When you follow the instructions above to open the file, make sure the box always use this program is checked.

Intersting ; i got the error message and als PDF-Files lost their association to the Acrobat Reader after I removed the old version 5.xx. After I have installed the old version separately again (I have both versions now) the problem was solved, the are opened only with the 6.0 Version by double klicking.

One question, are we talking about double clicking from a browser or double clicking from Window's Explorer? If one works and not the other, then the browser plug-in may be what needs fixing.

The Adobe 6 reader installer is somewhat flaky. I think Adobe is using some new architecture, because some optimizer runs when you click on the installer. I suppose it is making a custom build that will take advantage of your processor capabilities.
