Powerport Question

I have a Sony Vaio laptop that I want to use on an AA flight from ORD to Tokyo. Do I need a Power Converter with a plug specific to my laptop such as the Lind brand discussed here, or can I use a converter that provides a home "type" three prong outlet such as the APC Travel Power 75 DC/AC Inverter discussed here. Aren't I better off using the home "type" because I can use it for both my Ipod and my Sony Laptop? Also, will my laptop charge while it's plugged in? Thanks in advance !!
