Sun Java Plug-in - question

Sun Java Plug-in - question
Im installing some bank software that appears to have a problem with 'Sun Java Plug-in'. Where do I find out if my system has this plug-in installed? Can this be toggled on/off or do I have to go through the entire installation process all the time?

More information please. Are you installing this on a Sun platform or Windows? Is it Windows accessing a Sun platform? If you know more, you may search for the plug-in on support.sun.com or search the MS KB.

Gaucho, from what I saw when in IM with you you DO have Java installed but it is probably an outdated version, just go to www.java.com and get the newest version installed, it will configure itself automatically for you.

Im running Windows XP professional.
Im having trouble with this Bank software... and am trying to do some troubleshooting.
Scotty, you are suggesting an update of my current version, but, the bank software seems to not work well when this Java thingie is installed... why will an update solve this?

Short version: Java is a programming language developed by Sun to allow a program to be written once and run on multiple platforms (e.g. Windows and Macintosh). Microsoft developed its own Windows-only version, defeating the purpose of Java. Sun sued Microsoft and won.
The court ruled that MS had to remove its special version of Java from Windows, which it did-- but MS replaced it with an old, outdated version. That is why programs written for modern Java versions won't work in Windows XP.
As ScottC suggested, go to www.java.com and click the "Free Download" option in the top right corner to make sure you have the latest version installed.

I would also suggest uninstalling any old versions that might be present before installing the latest version. I failed to do that before and somehow ended up with two or three versions of the Java runtime environment on my computer.

If it truly will not work with Sun's JVM you might be in trouble as the MSFT JVM is not around anymore (thank you FTC). You might be able to find the final version searching goggle but don't go looking at MSFT for it.
You should be able to find any version of Sun's JVM in add/remove programs and make them go away.
