T-Mobile woes...

Was just wondering if anyone else has had sudden strange problems with T-Mobile USA lately. About a month ago my phone started sending the former account holder's name (instead of mine) in caller id. T-Mobile has tried for 2 weeks to fix, but I am still "Jennifer" to anyone I call.

Also the Ericsson T-300 always seems to take 2 or 3 tries before dialing out successfully in California (despite strong signal), whereas in Europe or even Tijuana it can call out without a hitch. Maybe it's just time for a new phone!

I have T-Mobile (Nokia 3650) with no such problems that I'm aware of. Certainly I have no problem calling out. I don't call that many different people with it, and most don't have Caller ID, but I haven't heard that my ID is wrong.

Sounds like issues specific to your phone/account/location. The ID problem is related to your specific account, I would think. The signal stuff always varies by location and phone type.

I didn't even know T-mobiles caller ID sent out a name... I thought it only sent the number, have you tried it on several phones, are you sure it's not just linked to the name "Jennifer" in someones cell phone book?

Name only vs. name/number is a function of the service & equipment. Every cell phone I've owned receives the number only and correlates it to an address book entry to display the name. My home caller ID displays the nema and number info as sent by the phone company. When I first got my T-Mobile cellphone my home phone would display my cell phone number and name, now it displays the number and "Out of area."

All T-mobile numbers I've ever seen just show up as "cellphone", I've yet to see a t-mo subscriber call me and show up with his/her name...

AFAIK, Sprint is the only one who uses names for caller ID.

T-Mobile in California is a virtual network operator using Cingular... You sure Cingular isn't the crux of the problem? T-Mobile should be able to address this with them.

I can confirm JimC's problem here in Denver. It seems to be sporadic, though. My phone (and my wife's) will show up on landline caller IDs as her last name (we have the family plan; she is the account holder). However, my brother-in-law will show up as the person who previously owned that number. Also happens to my co-worker, who still gets a lot of calls asking for the previous owner of that number.

I'll also add that we got our phones in late 2001/early 2002. Co-worker and brother-in-law got their phones this summer.

Positive. It's the caller id displays on home phones that let me know I even had this problem.

Yeah, this would probably be the case with the phone having problems dialing out, but the caller id sending out the name of the girl who had the phone number before I did is T-Mobile's problem. Kind of a privacy breach too I would think.

name database, or lease one from another provider. The name database is most likely populated from business (billing records). There is also a possibility that access to the name database is unavailable or that the DB will take "too long" to respond with the information. So the call is completed with out the callers name. Such occurrences should be very rare.

Hmmmm, in the case of T-Mobile to an SBC landline, I'm assuming T-Mobile routes the call via their network but since it's routing via Cingular (e.g T-Mobile is a VNO in California/Nevada using Cingular). SBC picks it up and is using some stale name lookup database.

Thing to try is call someone else who is on a different landline provider (e.g. in a different market), like with Verizon landline or Qwest and has caller ID with a phone that has name listing. See what shows up.

I have good luck with T-mobile except when I am transiting SFO which is Cingular territory... no dropped calls but sometimes need to dial several times to get a connection
