Mozilla has a new browser out. They're calling it "Firebird".

Among the features are better IE compatibility, built in popup blocking, built in annoyance filters (like for animated gif's etc) and the best feature: Tab browsing. This feature: "Tab-Browsing changes the way you use the internet by allowing you to open links on a page in background "Tabs" and then read them when you're ready."

I'm getting to really like Tabs. I've got one created that pops all my most read FT Miles forums into multiple tabs, and another for the Travel Forums. I click once, and all the forum open in separate tabs. I can then click across and read them, or bounce between them very easily.

Got 7.1. Fast, but I've noticed that it has some problems with sites "optimized" for IE.

I'm using Mozilla 1.4 and it is fantastic. I love tab browsing, especially the way you can bookmark an entire tab set. I can have FT OMNI, Travel Technology, TravelBuzz, Community, In The News, United and whatever else open just with one click. There may be other websites you can put into tabs too but I'm not sure because I haven't tried it

I've been using Firebird since it was Phoenix, and love it. The only problem areas tend to be javascript heavy sites, and sites who insist on seeing a particular browser string and are confused by the one from Firebird.

The latter can be worked about by a simple plugin that will happily fake the browser/agent string to be anything you want (I personally switch it between various netscape and IE flavors).

Tabbed browsing, along with the built-in popup supression made the sale for me. That, and I can run it on my Sun at work and then move to the same browser on a windows platform.

Hmmm, I seem to remember reading (can't remember where) recently that Opera is not useable on a lot of web sites because:

i) It is very pedantic about supporting standard.
ii) It is equally pedantic about not supporting anything else.

I've been using Avant, http://www.avantbrowser.com which is basically a tabbed browsing wrapper around IE.

I've played with Opera, which I like, except that the free version takes up a bit too much screen real estate for me.

I've played with Mozilla, which I like OK under Linux but really don't like at all under Windows as it takes forever to de-iconify if you have a small memory footprint.

Firebird is at release 0.6 or somesuch, which seems a bit too early for me to adopt just yet.

Another great browser, or browser add-on. I'm going to be using this more than Firebird, because it's so much quicker!!

It's really nice to have all these options for browsing!

Yesterday I downloaded Avant, which is working great. I love the increased ability to control the browser. But there are a couple small issues. Maybe more experienced users can help:

1) When I use the roll button on the mouse at a high speed, instead of moving down a page, it scrolls through previously visited pages. Very aggravating. Is there a way to disable this?

2) As I browse right now, the forward and back buttons are not working.

Hmm, I don't have those problems. Try removing it and reinstalling it again...

Sorry to hear you're having problems. I have never expperienced the mouse problem you describe.

I have occassionally experienced quirky behavior, especially on my home Win 2k machine which I only reboot when absolutely necessary (e.g., the app has, on rare occassions stop responding to clicking on links).

I hate to sound like a bad tech support guy, but in those instances of quirkiness, a reboot has cleared it up.
