Search for Freeware to Create MP3s

I am looking for freeware for the PCs that will allow me to take my CD collection and make MP3s out of them -- so that they can be stored on my memory stick for my P800. Any suggestions on which software to get and where it may be available on the net?

Don't know of any that are free.

There are quite a few progrrams on download.com that will run for 30 days before they expire. Do a search on mp3 at http://www.download.com

The other option is to spend $10 and add the functionailty to Windows Media Player (there are also quite a few programs on download.com that can be licensed for about $10).

I use dBpowerAMP which is available free from download.com or here http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

It's very easy to use: in Windows Explorer right click over the file name and choose "Convert" from the menu.

I have used it to create MP3s from CDs, and also to create WAVs from MP3s.

It'll also create OGG files, perfect for on my Smartphone.

What's a good program, not necessarily freeware, that will catalog your MP3 collection, preferably with cover art options etc.? Something like what Windows Media Center Edition does, not that I've used that.

Exact Audio Copy. You have to find a copy of the lame.exe and lame.dll MP3 encoders, and it's not entirely point and click (until you set it up). The documentation is also cryptic.

However, what it does do (that no other ripper I'm aware of actually does) is either read each sector on the disk at least twice or relies upon newer drives that can auto-detect C2 disc errors. When it finds an error, it will tell you where in the track it is such that you can correct it.

The problem with many of the ripping and encoding combinations out there is that they don't do anything beyond simple jitter correction, and your MP3s will sound crackly, have pops, gaps, whatever. If you rip with EAC and encode with LAME, you will generally get a good rip unless it tells you otherwise.

I'm a snob when it comes to this type of thing. I only rip 320k/sec MP3s on the highest quality settings that LAME can produce. However, I don't have crappy MP3s.

http://mp3.radified.com explains ripping and Exact Audio Copy and LAME and everything else. It is a little technical but a great resource.
