Take a look at the Archos Jukebox Studio 20. It is a system that can get upgraded to your hearts content. I'd recommend the Studio 20, with the Rockbox software, and replace the Archos batteries with some 2100 mAh AA batteries.
You get a great 20gb mp3 player, 20gb of portable PC/Mac disk storage, and about 14-16 hours of life for about $250

For what you own on CD, you don't convert to mp3 then to ATRAC. Straight to ATRAC from CD.
If all you do is download mp3s from the net, then an Ipod is for you. If you're looking to make your extensive (and legal) music collection mobile, then a minidisc player is best.
Software inadequacies are surmountable. The fact that most people on the planet use Windows is proof of this.

I can't believe you're saying MD is best. How can you top carrying every cd I own, usb 2.0 transfer rate, 14+ hours run time, laptop storage, and an open format vs. a Sony all proprietary system that limits what you can do with your own legally ripped music?

I use to own a Minidisc player, but stopped using it after I got my gen 1 iPod.
It was always a pain to remember to bring my favorite discs and to keep records of what songs were on which disc.
Now everything is in one portable device, on my Powerbook, and on the CDs.
I don't have many songs though, only around 1100, around 4.3 GBs
I dropped it a few times, but it still works though is a bit dented. I don't expect that I will need a replacement for at least a few more years.

OK, truth be told: the only reason I big on the MD format is that my wife wouldn't let me buy an Ipod. I had to sneak-buy the minidisc, so I gotta justify it to myself somehow!
Besides, I don't wanna carry my entire collection with me. I'm fine with USB 1.1 (I'm in no rush), and the sony prop software hasn't hindered me one bit.

A 20GB 1.8 hard disk is packed into the mini-disc shaped aluminum body. The Toshiba Gigabeat G20 not only plays MP3 files but also supports the highly compressed Windows Media 9 audio format.

Oh, and you of all people should know that WMP9 does NOT always mean DRM!

Bikergirl, you can use the iPod along with the excellend ephPod software on Windows and sync the music back and forth. ephPod is free and is eons better than that MusicMatch crap.
I like the newest GigaBeat as well. This is the third generation of it and it looks pretty slick.
ScottC, I expect better of you than telling people to buy an MD player. Maybe an 8-track deck with a coin slot on the side and a car battery in a backpack? You should be ashamed of yourself!

Before you buy an ipod listen to other players. Ipod is the most popular player because it is the most popular player. It's simple and it works. I'm not saying it sounds bad. It's fine. But there are other things that sound better. I tunes is probably the best proprietary software though. Gigabeat room, SS, and the mrobe thing are much worse. Why can't everything just be drap and drop and support playlists on the fly? Seems like that would keep development costs down.

Just curious, as I've seen this happen several times. How does a 2 year old thread just suddenly show up again?
