The 2nd generation Sony DVD writer (DRU-500A internal, DRX-500UL external). Writes to all common DVD formats (DVR-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW). The exception is DVD-RAM which is dying anyway. When using write-once blank media, make sure you read about other people's experiences in various forums so you don't end up with expensive coasters. You can get blank media at a much better deal online than your neighborhood electronic store.

Just got the cyberguys catalog last night, they have DVD-R's for just over a dollar each.

No contest, the Sony DRU-500 is the only shipping writer which handles DVD-R (more compatible with standalone DVD players) and DVD+R (a better format for data storage).

It is out of stock nearly everywhere, though.

8x is coming out this summer, 16x early next year.

If cost is a factor, the Pioneer DVR-105 would be a good option.

I'd wait a few more months, the first $170 writers are popping up and I guess that around the summer they will be down to around $150.

Be careful of the Ricoh 5120. The current model is the 5125A, which seems to be a very good one. The 5120 was a flawed burner, and there may be some unscrupulous vendors trying to flog them off cheap.

No idea if the Ricoh 5120 is flawed or not, but its mechanism was used by (nearly?) every first-generation DVD+RW writer, including the HP100i and Philips units.

Though I think HP took them all back and exchanged them for newer units while Philips said "no way!"
