SIN internet access

Any suggestions on public internet access services (cafes, etc) to use in Singapore? I will be staying at the Hilton.

Thank you.

I don't know specifically for the Hilton, but most hotels offer Internet access through their business center. However, the charge is usually quite high. I remember once last year, while waiting for some copies to be made, someone asking at the Westin, and the charge seemed several times what you can find outside. (This was before the Westin had high speed internet access in the rooms, at a much more reasonable rate.)

I have a local access phone number in Singapore so although I'd seen a number of places offering Internet access by the hour usually in a smaller shopping center, I've never tried to remember just where they are located....

Try this number while you're in Singapore:

1900-7-777-777. CitySearchTM is an operator-assisted Yellow Pages Enquiry Service which operates daily from 7am to 11pm (Singapore time).

You could also try looking in Sim Lim or Funan; even if you don't find a place with Internet access there, one of the many shops selling computers could probably tell you where to go.

edited to add the bit about high speed internet access in the Westin rooms.

Are there Internet in Singapore where you can plug in your own laptop via wired or wireless Ethernet, rather than just use the provided computers?

I know about the free one in Changi airport, but apparently that's restricted to passengers in departure or transit (or is it accessible to the public?)

Any help would be appreciated!

The Hilton SIN is PATHETIC for internet service. They have no high speed connections in room and their business center seems to always be closed. For that matter the hotel is in fact quite poor and I would suggest you stay almost anywhere else in the city.

The Hilton has fairly slow internet service in its Executive Lounge tucked away in the corner. Not that great. Let them know that many of their competitors have high speed internet, for instance, the Conrad. I find the hotel ok otherwise and well located, but everyone's different.

One provider to hotels in SIN is www.net2room.com. Their site lists the facilities for which they are providers. There are a couple of internet cafes within a few minutes walk of the Hilton.

The Conrad also has Wi-Fi, for a fee, in some of its public spaces, which I have no trouble connecting to using a Cisco card.

In addition, SIN has at least one Wi-Fi provider for public spaces, www.bluengine.com. Their site discusses hotspots.

AT&T Global has two local v.90 access numbers, 68251800 and 68251888 . www.attglobal.com

Not sure if this helps, but Cybercaptive, a cyber cafe search engine has a list of locations in Singapore:

http://cybercaptive.com/zz/z220.html

Given the nature of the business, you might try to contact them before actually visiting the location to verify they are still in operation.

I stayed at the Hilton in SIN. Instead of the Hilton business center, I used Pacific Internet; this is a tiny place with three or four computers in Wisma Atria, a big mall on Orchard Road. From the Hilton, it's a five or ten minute walk; just past (i.e., east of) the Orchard Road subway station.

I also saw signs for another Internet service closer to the Hilton but didn't check it out.

Kathy

P.S.: Never mind; looks like this location of Pacific Internet has closed down. See below.

Follow-on...

Conrad has high speed internet in the room, via ethernet (cable is in the desk) for 20 SGD per (24 hr) day.

I think that you could ask any Internet Cafe for an ethernet connection via your own PC, paying the regular hourly rate. I almost did this recently but didn't want to lug my notebook. Forgot to ask if I could do this.

At Changi, both terminals, you can plug into ethernet (free) with your own PC. (in addition to 802.11 and even IR connectivity).

I've NEVER been able to get 802.11 to work at Changi. I'm pretty sure I was getting a signal but I could not 'associate' with any access point(s). I did not have an SSID, nor could I determine what it might be.

Hilton has high speed internet in the room via ethernet, for 35 SGD per 24 hr day.

Every other Hilton and Conrad in Asia has inroom Ethernet service, but the Singapore property DOES NOT. This has already been established in this thread. Also, although BA and QF have allegedly spent millions on their F lounge in Changi, they have NO internet access whatsoever in the lounge!! Worse, the attendants seem perplexed as to why you would want it, and suggest that you go and use an internet cafe. If you are there make sure to write in the guest book for the designers how crap this is. (As an aside the lounge attendants were highly insulted when I pointed out that Istanbul and Jakarta have better airport internet access than the BA lounge in SIN)

Apologies, I'm still jet-lagged...

Conrad Singapore DEFINITELY has in room, high-speed (ethernet) Internet for $20 SGD per day, I used it in Feb.

Hilton Singapore, who knows, I've never stayed there but I think some fellow FT'ers mentioned that the Hilton did not have high-speed (ethernet) Internet access (when we were in SIN this past weekend)?

I meant to say that the Grand Hyatt, that is where I stayed this weekend, does have high-speed in-room Internet access for 35 SGD per day.

Sorry for posting the mis-information.

It was last November that I was there. Maybe it's gone out of business, or relocated. (Not enough revenue for such a high-rent space?)

I took a look at the Wisma Atria website, and I believe it was in space 41 in basement #1, which gives no response when you click on it! On the other hand, isn't there a basement #2 as well? (Not shown on the website.)

Kathy

P.S.: I found the Pacific Internet Singapore site; no more locations in Wisma Atria.

I stayed at the Hilton last September, and used this other place (closer to the hotel). It was easy and convenient - assuming it's still in business. I think it was S$1/15 minutes. I do remember checking my UA MP account balance, and saw a list of about 4 or 5 other MP numbers in the auto-complete field - so perhaps other mileage runners use it too.
