Using Blackberry on Planes

From this mornings Washington Post:

"devices are strong enough to receive and send e-mail 30,000 feet in the air"

Interesting article. As the proud owner of one of these fine devices, I'm guilty of this as well, but I do believe the woman quoted in the article is telling "fish stories".

>>"Furthermore, she said she doesn't have to hold her Blackberry up to a window to get it to receive and send e-mail."..."I've done it from the aisle or middle seat. I've never not been able to get a signal,"<<

I always have to hold the device up to the window to get a decent signal while at cruise altitude, and even then coverage is very spotty...and I rarely, if ever, get a signal from a middle seat except while on the ground or very close to it!

I have seen it done from the middle row of a 777 at cruise altitude.

>>seen it done<<

Ahhh yes...I too have seen it done once...on my own unit! But "Seen it done" and "Never not got a signal" are two very different things...which was my point.

The author gives the impression that it is possible to get a 5-bar signal at all times in the air, which blatently false.

I tried using one on an ORD-EWR flight this week, but got no signal at all. Just the dreaded "X" next to the telephone pole. I had a window seat and held it right next to the window.
