AirPods Pro 2 are currently $154 on amazon and walmart.com. That's the lowest price I've seen.

Ive just upgraded to iOS 18 and taken the hearing test using my AirPod Pro 2.
I have moderate-severe loss in one ear and at a glance the test result chart is pretty damn close to my last professional test result.
Im not sure whether I have the confidence to use them in hearing aid mode (I have not yet taken the plunge to get a proper aid although that day will come), but I would consider using them at conferences or events with a lot of background noise where I struggle sometimes.

But why not turn hearing assistance on and try it? You can set it to adaptive, noise cancellation or transparent. See how the various modes work for you at home first.

That's encouraging. My audiologist asked me how my hearing worked; I said in environments (quiet) where I don't need it, it's great, and in environments (noisy) where I do need it, it hinders. (I understand from the audiologist and from talking to other people that this is common.) I've never had Airpods, but you make them tempting.

For the past few years, I've been buying my kids cheapo wireless earbuds (not over the ear, just stick in ear) from various popular Amazon companies (often recommended by NYT Wirecutter). About a week ago, one kid lost them (battery charging case and all) and I said, "well, maybe you should consider Airpods" - all my kids looked at me like I was nuts. Why would I want those? They fall out all the time! People try and steal them from you! Boy, did I make a blunder. Back to Amazon, I guess.
