Needing More HD Space

I made the dumb decision to spend over $4000 on a 16" MBP about 6 months ago and only got 1TB of disk space. Right now there's 80gb free and that'll go pretty fast. From everything I've ready the HD is not upgradeable. Has anyone ever bought an external SDD and used a hard drive sleeve so it's semi-permanently attached to the computer? Any options I'm not thinking of ? The last thing I want to do is sell it and buy another just because I need more space. This is what I was thinking of using: http://tinyurl.com/5n76av78 and http://tinyurl.com/msvvrann

I haven't added a drive sleeve to keep a drive semi-permanently attached, but I usually travel with an amenity bag full of SSDs and have many multi TB external HDDs at home. I tend to keep frequently used things or small things that I'll need to use on the internal SSD and large data sets on the external drives.

You might want to check that you really have nearly a TB of data that's active on the drive. Empty the trash and do a restart - we've had a few people at work posting on internal systems about somehow having nearly 1 TB of "System Data" and then it turns out to go away after a restart. There seems to be something with how the OS or the SSD handle data that's been trashed that sometimes space (and a lot of space) doesn't get freed up until you restart.

2TB flash drives are available now - about $150, and they just jut out a little from a USB port. I think that's the current max in flash drive/stick units.

What's your use case? For example do you take your MBP out of the office/house? Are all those files necessary? I generally offload un-needed files onto a NAS which maps when I'm at home (or in the office for work related stuff), I dislike stuff hanging off my laptop.... too easily yanked off/out and another thing to lose if you're out of the office/house. I also generally keep what isn't being actively worked on off my laptop in case of theft or for space reasons.

I bought a bare Crucial brand 2Tb SSD from Amazon a month ago for $74 shipped. The price fluctuates almost daily, and I caught it in a brief dip. They are very well reviewed and I have put 3 other 1Tb Crucial in our desktops and also a replacement for one of my security camera systems. The security system was the best upgrade, as the access speeds remotely are 5-10 times faster for streaming video. The 1Tb drives are listed at $64 this morning. 2Tb are running $115 currently.

That's $240 in two years. For less you get a credit card sized 2TB Samsung T7 external drive. I have that for over a year and it is very fast on my Macbook Pro. And it is much faster than cloud so you are not dependant on an internet connection and not in the quirks of the largest privacy violator.

External NVMe. It's the way to go with a MBP. I a 2TB NVMe in an external enclosure that I keep my raw. photos and music on to free up disk space.

+1 for the Samsung T7 drives. I have 4 of the 2TB T7 Touch drives (~$150 at Costco when on sale) and they serve me well. I don't use the touch features, but like the large ring around the touch sensor as an activity light. Steady 200MB-300MB/sec read/write times for me. I move about 2TB/week on them.

I put a 2TB NVMe in this little Asus Zenbook last year. $150. Apple's always been a bit stiff on pricing but now they're completely ridiculous with both RAM and storage.

Bonkers speeds:

Forget the pouch, just go with a straight-up hook & loop solution : https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookpro/..._external_ssd/

Or the OWC one with a built-in mounting solution - tho its only TB3, so perhaps compatibility issues with older USB-only hosts and is perhaps not as fast - plus BYO NVMe SSD at these prices: https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/envo.../thunderbolt-3

This USB4 Acasis enclosure is another option:
