Oculus Quest Virtual Reality on a Plane!

i fly a lot, and now that the oculus quest provides portable virtual reality, I just spent many hours across seven flights playing VR games on delta planes. so I made this totally weird video:

Maybe someone will find this useful?

I just got an Oculus Quest for my birthday a few weeks ago. This thing would be amazing on the plane! I am not even talking about games. There is an app call immersed VR and you could connect to your laptop and have multiple private big computer screens. You can even have a white board to write notes and walk around your virtual office.

And if you get bored working, you can watch a movie on like a 50' screen inside a movie theater using Bigscreen app. The Oculus Quest is really amazing for the price.. which is half of that of a premium smartphone.

Yeah, I've used Bigscreen and other video-watching apps on a plane too and it worked great. Watching media is one of the best uses for it. Not all planes have satellite wi-fi though, so streaming can be impossible on many flights. You can also try vSpatial, which also lets you work on many screens in a single space. Let me know you get a chance to try yours on a plane and how it goes!

Not sure I would want to try this on a plane - completely immersed without being aware of who is looting my carry-on bag.

I have the Samsung VR headset, and I generally watch movies on the plane. Once while I was flying on Southwest and flying with friends, I was told the flight attendant was waving her hand right in front of my face and laughing at me with my friends! Hahaha

Haha, the only thing in my carry-on bag is usually dirty clothes, so I'm fine if someone wants to steal it...

Yeah, the headsets are great for watching movies and forgetting you're on a plane.

Oculus just lowered the price of the new Quest 2 to $299 and it is faster, higher resolution, and lighter than the Quest 1. I sold my Quest 1 and pre-ordered the Quest 2. One thing I didn't like about the Quest 1 with virtual monitors is that I can't see my keyboard when I type. It looks like Oculus has partnered with Logitech to release a keyboard that you could "see" while wearing the headset.

Yeah, I ordered the Quest 2 also. Can't wait for it to arrive!

I picked up an Oculus Go earlier this year for watching movies and videos. Is the resolution on the Quest 2 worth the upgrade at the present price?

It seems Oculus does not like connecting to captive networks like hotel WiFi. Is there a workaround for this?

Oculus Go has 1280 1440 pixels per eye, whereas Oculus Quest 2 has 1832x1920 pixels per eye, so the fidelity improvement is noticeable. Considering that you can get the Quest 2 for $299 and you'll get 6DoF which Oculus Go doesn't have, in general it is a VERY good deal. Oculus Quest also has access to a much larger game and app library. But if you're just watching movies, you may be perfectly happy with the Go, and I think the Go is a surprisingly good product too.

The newest Quest software has the captive-networks problems fixed, so I can definitely connect to hotel and airplane networks with the Quest 2. Haven't tested this with my Go in a very long time.

Did you get the newer Quest 2 or the original model? The original is currently on sale for $199 refurbished. I'm considering that if it doesn't require a FaceBook login as is specified for the Quest 2 model. If you know of any compelling reasons to choose the newer model, I'd love to hear them.

I never considered bringing a VR headset on the go, but to play it on a plane (especially in economy) can really help distract you from the flight :P

Actually it just occurred to me that depending on when it might be in use it could get an admonishment from the FA... I've had AC and UA flight attendants ask me (some nicely, some not so much) ask me to take off headphones during take off and landings... I can only imagine how they would react to a VR headset.
