You are right, those prices are absurdly cheap, so there is almost nothing to lose by trying them. Thanks.

I second that thought and may give them a trial this Nov. in Spain. I wish they had an Apple/ios App, but it seems I can purchase data up to 40 days prior to activation on my desktop, then add to the plan from my iPhone according to support. I am willing to gamble $0.72 for a 1Gb, 1 day plan initially.

Draver/hornetcoach , please report back when you do.

Also see if their top up mechanism works (you should be able to top up on the same esim, don't have to install a second one if you want another 1GB 1 day or a 1GB 7day)

What is the Swiss roaming rates outside the WiFi calling areas? My US plan charges $12 per day with taxes which is too much for a vacation. That’s why I use a local esim for WiFi calling, communication apps and maps.

Just to give you an idea, Swisscom charges you like $18 for a package of 60 minutes and that's just for the EU+UK. Other than that it's like $2,36 a minute.

Well, Swisscom is not really a reference. They are just ridiculously expensive in all the departments. To my knowledge none of the main providers in Switzerland offer very reasonable prices on a prepaid base. Yallo (online brand of Sunrise) for example offers 1GB and 60 minutes of calls for 10 CHF (12 USD) a month prepaid. Not super expensive but also not cheap. However on a post paid subscription base you can find offers for like 10 to 15 CHF with unlimited local data. Go-Mo (which is the online brand of Salt) currently offers unlimited local data and 3GB EU roaming per month for 15 CHF post paid subscription, that's pretty good. Does not make sense though to get as a tourist.

I think Sunrise has 20 CHF offers for unlimited 7 days of data, not sure it includes any voice calls.

Or they charge about 3 CHF for unlimited data per day, each day you use mobile data, but you have to pay like 20 CHF up front for the SIM and enough credit.

Just a reminder that VOIP calling only uses about 1Mb of free or paid data per minute.

Dual Sim, Dual Standby phones can make calls just for just pennies per minute of data if you have a reasonably priced (<$2-$3Gb) data plan. I have T-Mobile for free roaming data and a $10 a month US Mobile 2Gb plan on their Warp/Verizon service. It gets free international calls from the US and calls made while roaming are $0 billed as originating in the US while using VOIP-IMS. This system gives me free roaming calling to international numbers while overseas. I have tested this a moderate amount in Europe, Asia, and Central & South America with consistent, stable results.

When I am in the US, the USM Verizon service is available for the rare loss of T-Mobile service, or for calling numbers I'd rather not have caller ID register my daily, main phone number.

Has anybody been able to install and use these eSIMs if their phones were still under contract to a US carrier?

IOW, is locked device still a thing with eSIMs?

A locked phone will prevent activating a sim/esim from another carrier. iPhone settings, general, about, carrier lock if the message is “No sim restrictions” any carrier esim can be used. My work Pixel, I don’t know how to check.

OK, I've been buying unlocked but the carriers have been offering aggressive "free" upgrades.

Most carriers have published their unlock policies. Verizon auto-unlocks every phone 60 days after it registers on the VErizon network for the first time, for example.

Hi you can compare esim plans on this website as well.

Who owns that website, in which country are they based and how can they be contacted other than by email?
On what basis are you recommending them?

frappant Sep 20, 2024 7:59 am

On Reddit, everyone is touting an eSIM provider.

Some disclose that they get a commission if you click their link, some don’t.

That’s why I hope more and more recognizable carriers directly offer prepaid eSIMs.

Their top up mechanism has worked every time I've tried it. I've done manually, not auto-renew.

Also their customer service has generally been very good. Email support has been quick and helpful. I had some issues with a couple of older no expiry SIMs and they just replaced them with working versions. Much better than "are you sure you have an unlocked phone, have you tried a factory reset, let us re-provision at our end within the next few hours, etc."
