iOS Security Bug/Fix

Seems there is a fix for a wifi security bug for iphones. The issue is that when on wifi someone could take over your phone. If you haven't received the update, check for it.

This is what happened to my husband's company phone (iPhone 6s) on Friday. He was working from home and connected to our home network which is behind a firewall. He was not using the phone. When he looked at it, almost all the apps had disappeared except for the default apps you can't delete and a few company installed apps.

Later that evening, we went to stream something on the Tivo and were presented with a screen that we were not connected to the internet. Every other device in the home worked fine. We had streamed on the Tivo on Thurs. night without issue.

We restarted the Tivo and it connected just fine.

Nothing appears to be out of order.

Could this iOS bug have allowed someone to access his phone and somehow also hit our Tivo? The router & extender are less than a year old with a pretty strong password.

NO. The "Broadcom WiFi vulnerability" fixed with this update would have been very hard to implement in any case anyway, This isn't related to that, you just had a transient outage not related to your iPhone.

Thanks... we just weren't sure what the heck happened. We've never had apps simply disappear.

If his phone was hooked up to the company to the point where they have control, there's a chance that their IT department sent a "Kill packet", for lack of a better term. That essentially wiped the device. Had that happen about 10 years ago when I had a blackberry. Somehow someone managed to hit the right button and did a force reset to all the company blackberries. All of our apps outside of the factory ones were wiped, thankfully being a blackberry most of us just lost a game or two, and pandora so no big deal.

Thanks! That was my first thought as well, but my husband claims that his company doesn't do that because people often use their own phones and wiping a personal phone is not a good idea. He's in IT, but has nothing to do with the phones.

I think it may have been accidental.

He's checking and I'll report back the response.

Just got an answer....

They did not issue a “kill command”. As I said, if they did, it would only kill the company stuff. He’s thinking (guessing) that it was an OS hick up. This is from a friend who gives me straight dirt, not company speak
