New Macbook Thread - 2016

Would love to discuss the upcoming and just-out announced (gasp) new Macbooks.

The 12 inch Macbook seems to be really cool, even though yes it's underpowered, yes only one port yada yada, but STILL it seems useful for travelers. The refresh is very minor...my concern is will it run Dragon Dictate quickly with little latency, as I use this all the time and it is a processing power hog.

Waiting to see about the new Macbook Pros. My rMBP is a 2013 I bought as a refurb in 2014, and it's about perfect anyway...

I ordered the fastest one (1.3ghz in 2016, ...?) as a potential replacement for my 2012 rMBP. It'll be here next week, I'm excited about it but skeptical that it'll be fast enough. We'll see.

I did Airs for years, but I finally went to the Pro Retina for the screen. Couldn't imagine the slow speed of the MacBook.

I hate extra weight, but really, the extra compared to my Airs just doesn't bother me at all. Sure, I'd be happy to get down a pound, but I don't think I'd trade it for that speed decrease - and some weight would get added back with some adapters.

Personally, I've got serious reservations about the long term viability of the keyboards on these (including the ones from last year). There's been a number of reports of people having problems with the keyboards starting to fail, and I know the one person we have in our department that has one also has intermittently had problems with her keyboard. Part of it just seems to be that they're exceptionally sensitive to any dust getting in, but they also seem to have some issues with failures, especially on things like the space bar. (All that on top of what quite frankly is a keyboard that has to be in the running for single worst keyboard ever created anyways.)

I think if the keys had a bit more travel, the MacBook keyboard would be okay. It definitely wouldn't be the greatest but you'd be able to get used to it. Unfortunately I feel like it's a bit of foretelling with regards to Apple's long-term plans, which if true may mean my late 2013 MacBook Pro will be the last Apple computer I own.

I have a mid-2013 MBA with all the bells and whistles imaginable and I am a very happy customer. It isn't as powerful as the MBP, but comes with longer battery life (which is very important to me).

I can't imagine myself ordering the new MacBook for one reason: It has no active cooling system. If you're working in an air-conditioned office and don't ask too much from your MacBook, passive cooling should be fine.

If you're working in high temperatures without A/C, that is going to be a problem and will probably ruin your hardware in the long term. Since I'm frequently working in offices, where the room temperature easily exceeds 100F in the summer months (March through October), I'm sticking to my beloved MBA.

I have a 2012 11" 4GB 128GB MBA with 1620 cycles. The computer is perfect and in good condition, battery of course last half of what the original capacity was but it doesn't bug me at all. And i have kept my MBA most of the time plugged! So... in theory i could have more cycles than what's indicated. The computer looks brand new as any other MBA, the keyboard doesn't even exhibit wear. I am really delicate with my computers.

In this lifespan... I have changed the SDD from 64GB (original it came with) to 128GB some years ago as mine... was one of the defective Toshiba drives. My Air is working perfectly and what i use it for, low intensive applications work perfectly. I never had any other problem with the laptop, and could probably keep this for 2 extra years if i really wanted.

For work has been superb. I can even slip it in my purse if i feel the like to carry my MBA, i'm also very mobile, meaning i can travel daily with my laptop wherever i go. And what i value the most is: 1.weight, 2.thinness and then everything falls behind. I am very petite female so i need a laptop according to my size. I am interested in purchasing the new Macbook 2016 to only upgrade in weight and thinness. Would look at the HP Spectre and many other laptops but i like Mac OS X- so windows it's not really a choice for me. If i need performance in my work, they usually can provide me with a laptop with higher specs for me to use.

I'm eagerly waiting for the WWDC to hear for the new MBP updates. If the updates to the new MBP are alluring (i understand a new redesign is coming through the pipe), i might choose the smallest MBP available instead of the new Macbook.

Man - you all keep these way longer than I do. Just about yearly, I buy a new one and dump my old one on eBay. A unit that's around a year old has pretty good resale value - I'd guess in the 70-75% range.

My girlfriend bought the new MacBook (as opposed to the 2006-2011 MacBook) after the battery in her MacBook Air turned the lower-half of the machine into a giant aluminum blister, but she has decided she hates the thing just because of all the esoteric and expensive peripherals that are required just to make it functional. She also had trouble using it with AirPlay on her Apple TV, the audio and video wouldn't stay in sync and had trouble connecting to 5GHz Wi-Fi networks. Unfortunately she ran out the clock on returning it while we were on holidays.

She has ordered one of these to see if it will improve her attitude about it:

Yep, had the same thing happen to my Gen 1 MacBook Air, as a result of the thin casing and not putting a shield/wrapper around the lithium battery. Apparently it's because the batteries are only meant to last 3 years, after which Apple recommends replacing your MacBook.

I'm looking forward to the announcement of the new MacBook Pros, whenever that is, as my 2012 pre-retina is pretty well near the end of it's life, after years of travel abuse.

Very interesting... I wonder how the transmission speed compares to Thunderbolt docks.

The USB-C port on your MacBook supports data-transfer speeds at up to 5 Gbps (USB 3.1 Gen 1).
My greatest hope is that the HDMI out works really, really well. Because she is extremely frustrated with AirPlay.

I'm not really convinced any of the wireless video systems are really ready for primetime myself, airplay, chromecast, miracast, whatever. I've got a room we set up for a conference room where we installed both an apple tv for airplay, and a miracast receiver. Both are "ok" for relatively static material like power point presentations, but god forbid if you wanted to do anything with video.

I'll probably upgrade to a new MBP 15" this year. I'm on a 2013 I bought refurb in 2014. The one complaint I have (with all Macs really) is heat dissipation. Especially with Chrome and Youtube videos. I am hoping for more speed, fewer lags.
