recommended office suite

i purchased a new Macair last week. would like to install an office suite. am not excited about the new rental rates for msOffice. we have no software installs left on our 2 boxes of officemac 2011.

i bought a Macair because wife does not want to carry a macbook withHD.

got too old to do complicated stuff. just need simple WP and Exel replacement.

If you have a Google/Gmail account, you already have access to Docs/Sheets/Slides/Drawings. Have you checked those out? Free but for the value of the marketing information Google silently leeches from you

I've always been a fan of Open Office. The UI isn't quite as refined as MS Office, but it's still very powerful (and free).

iWorks? Has Numbers, Pages and Keynote. Save files to iCloud, easy download from the App Store.

Give Google Docs and iWork a try. You may find there are functions, that Office does well, that you can't do without. I have tried Libre Office, but only on my Linux VMs. Seems like a pretty good Office replacement.

I would recommend LibreOffice which has more active development than Open Office.

iWork also has a little-known web UI on iCloud.com, similar to Google Docs but more resembling a desktop application.

If you want to be sure folks receiving your documents who have Word have your formatting completely mangled (or cannot open it at all) then Open Office is for you

Always send PDF to external folks.

(Even multiple versions of Word will mangle your formatting...)

Are you rejecting MS Office completely or just the purchase of a box set?

I found the Office 365 to be a reasonable offering for the price - when costed over a few years and with the cloud storage included.

As mentioned upthread, there is a reason why it sells and makes money!!

An absolute no-brainer if you're using a Mac: NeoOffice.

It's basically Open Office for the Mac and I personally find it better than MS Office.

If it were me, and I was trying to avoid complication, I'd buy a copy of Officemac 11 for $100-120 or so, being offered many places, rather than learning an entire new suite of applications and worrying about interoperability.

I've used LibreOffice and Google Drive, and they are pale imitations. Inevitably, there's some functionality I want that isn't in them. Their user interfaces are very similar to Office, but not quite as good. I always wind up coming back to Microsoft's arms...

Though, it's been a while since I used them.
