recommended office suite
i purchased a new Macair last week. would like to install an office suite. am not excited about the new rental rates for msOffice. we have no software installs left on our 2 boxes of officemac 2011.
i bought a Macair because wife does not want to carry a macbook withHD.
got too old to do complicated stuff. just need simple WP and Exel replacement.

Give Google Docs and iWork a try. You may find there are functions, that Office does well, that you can't do without. I have tried Libre Office, but only on my Linux VMs. Seems like a pretty good Office replacement.

iWork also has a little-known web UI on iCloud.com, similar to Google Docs but more resembling a desktop application.

Are you rejecting MS Office completely or just the purchase of a box set?
I found the Office 365 to be a reasonable offering for the price - when costed over a few years and with the cloud storage included.
As mentioned upthread, there is a reason why it sells and makes money!!

If it were me, and I was trying to avoid complication, I'd buy a copy of Officemac 11 for $100-120 or so, being offered many places, rather than learning an entire new suite of applications and worrying about interoperability.

I would recommend LibreOffice which has more active development than Open Office.

I've used LibreOffice and Google Drive, and they are pale imitations. Inevitably, there's some functionality I want that isn't in them. Their user interfaces are very similar to Office, but not quite as good. I always wind up coming back to Microsoft's arms...
Though, it's been a while since I used them.
