They call me up -- I'm the IT guy. Due to hanging around FT too much, I also somehow inherited the position of office travel planer & exec concierge. I have a cute little map on one of my displays which shows which city every user is in and I'll often shift my schedule to match where people are. Weighting has more to do with importance than # of people traveling. I'll also shift maintenance/backups to coincide with travel schedules as well.
Even when I went in for surgery a few years back, I opted to do without general anesthesia and yes my phone came into the OR with me. I was back in the office by 11am. Fortunately no calls/e-mails whilst I was in surgery... and this is something most people usually need a day or two (minimum) off from work to recover. The procedure wasn't pleasant, but I felt fine by the time I walked out of the post-op room.
