android offline map with progressive search (germany)
I'm looking for an android offline mapping app that allows you to search for locations "progressively" - i.e., the way you can with Google Maps, where you can type in part of a word, pick a completion, then re-select the location field and edit it, add a street number, etc.
The reason is that I'm going to Germany, and I'm unlikely to be particularly fast at typing place names - and in the case of places with weird letters in them, it may be agonizing. For instance, for Kurfrstendamm 12, I'd like to type "Kurf", get a completion for the street name, then re-select the location field and add the "12".
So far, I've tried: city maps 2 go, berlin map, maps.me, citymapper, and osmand. Osmand came the closest, but address entry seems to be through a clunky series of menu pages. None of the others managed it at all.
The other minimal requirement is public transport. In case you're wondering, Google Maps won't let you search or show transport layers when offline, though apparently that functionality is coming "this year". When I have wifi service, I'll just use Google Maps.

I would try HERE maps. It's a mapping app from Nokia and available for Android. I used it on my Samsung Galaxy S4 while offline. In order to use the app offline, you download map packs for different countries or regions to your phones hard drive or memory card.
Since I downloaded the app, I have only travelled out of the US once. On my trip to Canada, I can report that it worked pretty darn well. I downloaded the British Columbia map pack before leaving the US and was able to access the map data offline. I was able to search for restaurants and other points of interest without any issues.
It's good to note that the map data can be large. I saved the data to my memory card rather than my phones memory to save phone storage space.
I am not sure about using the app for public transport while offline. I did not attempt to use the feature, and I am not sure if the app offers it or how well it works.
There is a thread in this forum for this app: Here Maps
The app can be found of the google play store here: Google Play | HERE

Thanks for the reply. I'd skipped over HERE, thinking it looked more like a turn-by-turn navigator - but it appears to be basically what I was looking for. It has the google-like notion of an editable location field, and switchable driving/walking/subway route planning is a bonus. (You can't text-edit both ends of a route, because it drops you back into search mode - but since route-finding pulls up a list of your recent searches, it's not a big deal. Also, subway routing weirdly doesn't seem to work in offline mode - but again, I'm not complaining too much.)
