Recommendation for Docking Station
Technical experts,
My partner is looking for a good option so he can use a new HP monitor with his Dell XPS 12 netbook.
Nothing fancy... the monitor has an HDMI cable.... and could use a few USB ports.
The netbook only has two USB ports... and no HDMI connection.
Any inexpensive solution that any of you use or recommend?
I use the DisplayLink.... but for some reason not working with his machine and monitor.
As always, any advice appreciated.
William

I would try getting the DisplayLink issue figured out before you start messing around with USB docks (mainly because this machine doesn't have any USB 3.0 ports, only USB 2.0). Have you enabled Display Extend/Mirror on the machine? And selected a resolution appropriate for the monitor?

HHHmmm.... the configuration of the machine says it has USB 3.0 ports.... and I am using a Display Link with my XPS 12 netbook.
His netbook does not even recognize the DisplayLink. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling.

I'd see if the video drivers and/or the SOC drivers need to be updated... also, try a refresh or even restore of Win 8/8.1 if necessary (though you'll have to reinstall non-modern apps and files which can be a pain).
Is this the XPS 12 with the rotating screen? Maybe there was a configuration with USB 3.0 I wasn't aware of... if so, there are some decent USB 3.0 video docks out there in the $50-$100 range (the $15 VGA adapters might require more processor headroom than you have available).

I don't know if it's any good or not, but here is a Dell unit that they list as compatible.
