e-boarding pass scanner and Apple Pay problems.

Happened during my last trip departing LGB this past weekend.

With my iPhone 6 and a Delta passbook e-boarding pass, when I placed my phone on the TSA scanner, Apple Pay kept on turning on until I held the iPhone several (maybe 4-6) inches above the scanner.

Was confused the first few times thinking I accidentally swiped the passbook.

Are the TSA scanners NFC enabled? The Desko Penta scanners have NFC optional, maybe the TSA scanners have NFC.

Has anyone else had this issue?

I have not had this problem with my Google Nexus 5. I know it isn't Apple, but it has NFC and I keep the NFC on all the time.

I have had my phone beep at me when I've held it in my hand and just happened to put a hotel key card next to it.

Don't the "smart" or e-Passports have NFC chips in them? Would then makes sense that TSA scanners are NFC enabled.

I may do that on my next domestic trip in a couple days, but wanted to try again and see if I had the same problem.

No issues with false NFC hits on my GS4, and it is prone to false hits if held back-to-back with my wallet (picking up NFC in a MARTA transit card). Haven't tested with the Moto X 2014 I just got this weekend.

No, it isn't different. Passports have RFID chips, which are not NFC

Actually it's not different. NFC is a form of RFID. The chips in the passport are ISO/IEC 14443 standard on which NFC and EVM (the NFC chip in your credit card) are built. The three technologies are interoperable. Thus, your NFC phone or credit card can be read by the TSA document scanner.

There are apps to read your passport's NFC chip with your phone for eg https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...rtreader&hl=en and I tried this (although not this app, but I did try something a year or two ago) and it worked so the technology is certainly the same. Whether the TSA scanner utilizes this is anyone's guess (although where is the screen for the operator??)

Unhappy re: e-boarding pass scanner and Apple Pay problems

This happened to me just now at Long Beach airport. Trie dot use my boarding pass with Passbook and every time I put the phone by the TSA scanner it would switch to my credit card on Apple Pay in Passbook. Total nightmare. I had to leave the TSA line and go print a paper boarding pass outside security! Awful. Be warned.

Apple Pay & LGB

I had the same thing happen to me at LGB Saturday morning. The quickest solution I could come up with was to delete my credit cards from Passbook. Fortunately, I was able to do that before getting sent out to print a paper boarding pass. Strange that it seems to be an issue unique to LGB.

Can you bring up the barcode in the airline app instead of passbook? I thought I read that somewhere here.

Yes you can view boarding pass in most airline apps. You can also email yourself the boarding pass.

I used my airline app the last time I went through security (although I'm usually a paper boarding pass users).
