Will they ever come out with a decent portable blu-ray player?

seriously? perhaps there is one already out. any recommendations?

i have a large collection of dvd's and blu rays and it would be nice to take them with me for long cross country trips.

i have the ipad, but the movies you download from itunes aren't the kinds of titles i'm interested in.

There are several of them from Sony, Philips and Samsung along with a few no-name brands. Check Amazon for "portable blu ray player".

So porn then?

These portable devices aren't going to use super HD screens. Might as well stick to DVD instead of looking @ BR (unless you also want to plug it into the TV @ your hotel).

GIYF!

Search for "Bluray rip <your operating system>" (On a mac I use handbrake)

rip bluray to mp4 (this will take a while)

download vlc from the app store to your ipad

upload ripped mp4 file.

Watch and enjoy.

Handbrake works for all three OSes. But for Windows perhaps http://download.cnet.com/Any-Video-C...-10661456.html is better.

Honestly, I don't know if that sector of the industry is going to experience much more R&D and development. Sony should also be releasing a new format soon, with 30x the capacity. Wouldn't that be nice.

Just buy software to rip them. It's doubtful that anyone will build such a device as the sacrifices you need to make in terms of using discs is just too much. They're sort of deprecated at this point.

Bluray is a PITA. Updating your player, waiting to skip all of the warning screens, ads, etc, make them basically useless to me.

unskippable content killed blu-ray for me. the posts above pretty much list all of the other ways i watch movies.

I hear you on that. Sadly, the only clean way to do a lot of content nowadays is to pirate it. The unskippable content went pretty high up in the courts. It was ruled that skipping it wasn't fair use and so you couldn't bypass the DRM.
