I've been trying to figure out which one I want. I honestly think just the standard Hero3 White would do me just fine, but why not just spend the extra $100 for the Hero3+ Silver? I have no interest the Hero3+ Black, mainly because of price. I can't bring myself to spend $400 plus another $120 on a pair of 64GB MicroSD cards for something I will probably use very rarely.

Fortunately money is not a problem and my teenage kids are pushing me to invest in one for an upcoming,water-based family holiday.I was going for the black
Plus I like gizmos and gadgets even though I never understand them.
Memory-wise why do you need a pair of 64GB cards ?

I have the Hero3+ and think it's fantastic. If money is not an object, it is worth it and is really fun for the whole family. You wind up seeing and remembering your trips in a totally new way.
As far as a pair of 64GB cards, I think that's a bit extreme. One 64GB card will hold a few hours of 1080 video at the highest frame rate. I like the Hero3+ because it has built in WiFi and a remote - so you can turn it on and off as needed. Going through hours of video from a vaction can be daunting - at least with the WiFi, it gives you flexibility to record only when you want to. GoPro also offers a free smartphone app which is easy to use as well.
And the picture quality is excellent. It can literally be an all-around camera on a vacation. I would recommend you purchase the LCD back if you want to use it as a camera for stills though.
I would recommend an extra battery or two if you are going to be out all day. They only last about 2 hours of constant use - so if you are out all day, you will want a backup and relatively speaking, they are not that expensive. Get them on Amazon.
I've spent $150 in accessories so far. It's a bit of an addiction, but we are having a LOT of fun with it.
Good luck

Hero 3+ have been on sale recently, as much as this might sound crazy I think a newer one is coming-which would put their turn cycle at about 8-9 months lately. But, I just say hero 3+ for 250$ with a kit at BestBuy a week ago.

If you can get the Hero3+ on sale, grab it. From what I've read, the Hero 4 will be released in June, but its primary differentiator is more shooting levels at 4K (I personally don't see the use at this point). It will have a different lens to help in low-light situations, but IMO, I don't think it's necessary for the average user and family. I've been really happy with the Hero3+ and see no reason to upgrade to the new model.
My only complaint is that the LCD menu is not ideal. I hope a future release has a better interface/menu that's easier to read. You have to view it at the right angle. I find myself making the necessary adjustments through my phone and then heading out.
Great device though - we are definitely having fun with it.
Smooth travels!

I had no idea what a gopro hero was until I just googled it.
I've recently noticed people walking around with these things seemingly stuck to their chins. Is the idea that you can record your whole life? I find it quite bizarre to be honest.
It will look like an episode of Peep Show (UK people will know what I'm on about).

REI anniversary sale starts tomorrow, they advertise a GoPro Hero 3+ Black helmet bundle with $100 worth of extra accessories, all for $399.93 (normally $500, so no membership is needed). I just read the coupon details here, and GoPro is not listed an exclusion, so perhaps if you just want the camera only, you can save $80 (lifetime membership costs $20).

Well, I got one....the cheapie, $199 "White"...pretty excited! Taking it to Sicily / Etna hike, Egypt on a river cruise, and Thailand. Like kid in a candy store excited...probably too excited (considering the reviews I'm hearing on battery life).
Wondering about the logistics of using the suction cup to put this thing on a hotel window and do a dusk to dawn time lapse.....how can I make that work, battery wise? Do I just leave it plugged in the whole time?
Anyone have experience w/ the time lapse function?
Also, anyone know a good 1-2-3//"how to" beginners guide for this thing? Busy as hell, so don't want a book or anything over an hour, but I do want to know how to use this thing functionally on Trip #1.

Right. So I'm wondering what the best bet is for an 8 hour (ish) time lapse? I know it's done, and I know people don't sit up all night plugging in batteries...
