Ditto on Crashplan.

Upload speed is wildly variable for me and seems to depend on how compressible the files are.

3-2-1 works well if you can do it

3 Copies of your data

2 Different storage media's (different HD's maybe different manufacturers even)

1 Copy kept offsite

This will require that you invest in removal media x3 but it is a very good Strategy.

Another vote for Crashplan - offsite, easy to use, "fit and forget" backup solution.

Coupled with onsite external drives and a home network drive you have a very good backup solution. Recover from the external drives immediately, rely on the offsite if it's all gone to hell in a handbag.
