I've had varying degrees of data quality and connectivity with my TMO plan. I'm on Android, not iOS, but I find I sometimes have to connect manually and even reboot the phone to get it to find the signal.
I was also just in Buenos Aires and found Movistar dreadful. When it found 4G it was usable, but the more widespread 3G signal was pretty dismal. That said, in South Africa and the Middle East in May, had amazing data speeds everywhere. Fast 4G and it grabbed almost immediately when I turned it on. And in Japan I had lightning-fast service everywhere. I think every country is a bit different. I suspect TMO's roaming partners are not always the premier carrier in each market, which might account for the variance in service. Still, for the convenience of not having to buy SIM cards and the overall service I get with TMO domestic and international, I'm finding it to be an exceptional value. I have been very happy that I made the switch. You do raise an interesting point though, I am going to contemplate an android phone to see if there is something about the way iOS is trying to negotiate with the local networks is causing issues. My longtime suspicion, however, is that the registration process between device<->local network<->T-mobile is what is still not fully worked out. My expectation is that it should just work when I turn it on in each new city. |
Works in HK, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore. Speed isn't great, but good enough to send and retrieve e-mails.
Where it doesn't work? Palau! Well, Palau isn't on the list anyway. |
I personally love Tmobile - free intl text and data, its pretty amazing deal for 50 bux a month.

Just back from a week in Sao Paulo - honestly worked very well. A little slow compared to LTE here in the states but good enough for the essentials (maps, email, texting, light browsing, reddit!)

I just spent 2 weeks in Australia - Sydney, Melbourne and Noosa Heads.
Even buying a high speed pass never got us more than 3G speeds in any of these places. We involved support at one point, and they claimed that this is the best that Australia has to offer, and refunded us the cost of the pass. To be fair, WiFi there was really slow too. I'm happy to be back on LTE! |

I spent much of April and May in Oz. I had ATT International in my phone and T-Mobile in my tablet. ATT was great. I have up on T-Mobile.and bought a local SIM with Amaysim. No complaints except with T-Mobile.

4 month cruise around the world with Tmobile
The Tmobile coverage was amazing.
Other than in the South Pacific, Madagascar and Mozambique we had cell coverage in: Dominican Republic Columbia, Ecuador Peru Chile (Easter Island!) New Zealand, Australia South Africa Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil Barbados and St Thomas. One of my favorite things is the long list of text messages from Tmobile welcoming me to each country as we arrived. I refuse to delete it because it is just so cool. I am a Tmobile evangelist. It worked like a charm. |

Such a good deal in fact that I won't bother with buying new SIMs when traveling now. Wifi is ubiquitous now (especially in Europe) and the unlimited text and data even at slower speeds is good enough in emergency. And so is $.20 per min if I can't find fast enough wifi for calling. Thanks T-mobile!!! |

Noob Question: Should I set "Data Roaming" to On in my iPad Mini when overseas with the TMo SIM & Simple Choice plan?
This advice appears under the Data Roaming switch: "Turn off data roaming when traveling to avoid charges when web browsing and using email and other data services." |
