You can swap the sim via an online form http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-4677 so I just get a backup sim when they're running the $0.01/sim specials instead of paying the store $10.

Thanks for the info on the online swap.

I picked up 2 micro sims, but didn't get a nano sim the last time I saw the special, but will keep my eyes open.

Good news was that the TMo employee didn't charge me for the replacement sim. (May have been running a special over Labor Day weekend, perhaps?). The folks at my local store have been great and I'll go out of my way to pick up stuff there, rather than the closer one in the mall...

I switched my Nexus 5 over to T-Mobile specifically to lower my month bill and have the Global data and SMS at no extra charge prior to my trip to Amsterdam and Copenhagen last week.

My experience was pretty consistent. The phone would find service within a couple minutes of being taken out of airplane mode. SMS messages informing me I was in a country covered by the data and SMS roaming would arrive.

These are the carriers I saw. I have an Android Wear app installed that notifies me on my smartwatch when the carrier or network changes.

France (CDG)
F Bourgues Telecom France roaming HSPA

Denmark(CPH and Copenhagen)
3 DK Denmark roaming HSPA

Netherlands(AMS and Amsterdam)
NL KPN Netherlands HSPA+
T-Mobile HSPA+

In France right now.

It is NOT working though I have good reception on SFR on my iPad Mini Retina.

In the Cellular Data pane of Settings app, I have Data Roaming on but below, the gear is turning on Personal Hotspot (it's not in the left main column along with Cellular Data, VPN and other main categories.

It worked fine in MUC during a layover. Connected to T-Mobile Germany network and I could actually turn on Personal Hot Spot ( which then appeared UNDER Cellular Data, not WITHIN it) and have my iPhone share the connection.

But since landing at MRS and driving to Avignon, it connects to SFR and occasionally to Bouygues but no live Internet connection on either.

Have to think its due to this weird state with Personal Hotspot.

Tried rebooting iPad, tried popping out SIM and reinserting and it's the same thing. Also tried turning off Cellular Data for awhile and re enabling it but then Personal Hotspot looks like its trying to initiate.

Anyone see this in France or any other t-mobile roaming country?

Yes, I have. Occasionally, I have had to help it along by doing *766# then press send. It forces the request for data roaming.

Unfortunately I can't dial on my iPad.

If I could send it as an SMS ...

I've seen that idea discussed in other forums tho.

Sigh I thought about changing to T mobile for the Global data coverage but in my house (8 miles from downtown Baltimore) I get 1 bar of LTE at best, switches to 4G often and this AM I was on Edge... thank god for the test drive to convince me not to switch.. I'll test some more at work and all because conceivably I could get by with wifi calling but it's likely looking like a no go...

T-Mobile will give you a signal booster for free.
They currently have stock in LTE signal boosters. As long as you live in an area that has at last 1 to 2 bars of 3G/4G or LTE, they will send it to you and reception at home shouldn't be a problem anymore.

I'm not sure if they also do it for prepaid customers, but I got one as a 50$/month simple choice customer

Why not get it and use wifi calling at home? They'll even give you a free router optimized for wifi calling (with a $25 refundable deposit).

One thing that's important to me is the ability to use my phone as a hotspot; even at home. Two summers ago we lost power at the house for 1 week and I was able to use my phone for the entire time. I don't want to have to rely on a booster to use my phone at home. Plus, the signal at work is sub par too. I might try again when they have 700 mhz support. Wifi calling would mean I would have to upgrade all my other phones to support wifi calling.

Hi All,

I hope I'm not being redundant with my questions. If I am, I do apologize!

I have an iPhone 5S unlocked with Cricket (ATT network) for my USA use. I can't use Tmobile because coverage is very poor here in Montana.

I have a couple of simple questions:

I travel around the world extensively and would like to use Tmobile's international data roaming plan, at $50 per month

Can I dual sim (Cricket and Tmobile) on my iPhone 5S or possibly a new iPhone 6? Or, should I just have a separate phone for my Tmobile use?

Am I correct in reading that for $50 per month, month-to-month (no contracts), I will get 1GB of international data?

With the extra taxes, fees, etc, what does that translate to per month?

The short answer is to enroll in simple choice plan, no contract, unlimited domestic data/voice/text, unlimited international data/text and 0.20/min for intl calls [originating from overseas only]. The unlimited data is high speed up to x gb cap, then slows to edge.

There is a wiki and for further confirmation, easy call to TMO customer service for more details. And tons of answers in this thread, just do a little lifting ;)

Your phone is unlocked. So, yes, you can change sims back and forth, if that's what you are asking. Most folks with unlocked GSM capable phones do just that.

As for your second question, I think it's unlimited data. But's it's throttled to EDGE speeds,

Anyone see this in France or any other t-mobile roaming country?

Please ensure if you can edit the APN that it is: fast.t-mobile.com
NOT anything else

Also once on the carrier wack cellular data off then back on; ensure if your iOS device has it that "Enable LTE" is OFF.

There are occasional issues for getting the roaming carrier to authorize data - this is a problem across any carrier. I've had issues with SFR on my German and AT&T SIM's also before. Forever to get data and in some cases it involved multiple radio/airplane mode on/off. Once I got it for the trip worked fine.

wco81 Oct 4, 2014 1:22 pm

Thanks, I'm back from my trip, never got it to work in France. Well briefly it must have because I did get the disclaimer message.

The APN was correct (it auto populates). I had Enable LTE on (never seen LTE speeds while roaming internationally but kept it on because there seems to be some reporting on this thread that they've seen LTE speeds) and had roaming On as well (I turn off roaming when back in the US).

I'll try different combos of settings next time.

But I set it up this way and it worked in Amsterdam, Italy and briefly for a layover in MUC where it roamed on the German T-Mobile network. So I thought these settings would be universal.

I have a trip coming up next month in Vienna and Prague so will be interested to see if it works in those cities. Only spending a couple of days each so probably not worth spending $20-25 or more to get local SIMs there.

If that doesn't work, I may just stop paying for the month to month Simple Choice data-only plan, though it's cheap enough to be useful in the US.

I'm suppose to only get 1 GB but whenever I check my account, it shows zero data usage. ANyone else see that?

This is my guess...

You're supposed to only get 1 GB of high-speed data with the base plan. Since the Simple Choice Plan theoretically limits you to 2G speeds while roaming, you wouldn't be using any of your 1 GB of high-speed data.
