Has anyone successfully extracted analog stereo audio from the ChromeCast using a HDMI audio extraction device? I purchased a HDMI-to-VGA+stereo dongle on ebay and it worked for video but not audio.

The goal is to cast audio wirelessly from my Android device to my stereo system without hooking the output up to a TV too.

Thanks.

Hmm that is a good question and I'm not sure if it is possible.
I would check androidcentral.com and google for advice. Usually a bluetooth audio receiver would be the best and can usually be found for under $30. That's what I use to play music from my Android device or computer to my surround sound.

Just a thought - was the audio you were trying to extract regular 2-channel PCM audio? Many of these extractors won't be able to extract anything other than this. If the audio was Dolby Digital for example, it may not have been able to extract it.

On the HDMI interface side the Chromecast appears to be very standard, so the same adapters and extractors should work on that side if they work with any other HDMI-connected device.

How would you selectively send the video only to the Chromecast and the audio to the Bluetooth receiver though? Not aware of how you'd do this?

I had no idea what audio the ChromeCast dongle put out though there was talk that it could do everything from stereo through 5.1 (Netflix)

In any case, I purchased an AGPtek audio extractor from Amazon and am happy to report it works flawlessly with every app that I was interested in that supported casting!

It was more than I had wanted to pay for a device of this sort but cheaper than buying a new HDMI capable receiver

Oh. I was thinking the poster wanted the audio only.

If anyone in the UK is thinking of getting a Chromecast then there's some offers at the moment. Picked one up a couple of days ago on Tesco Direct for 18 quid, they're out of stock now but Currys still have them at that price for the moment.

Since this thread is still around, I'll amend my earlier remarks. I think I bought mine before they hit critical mass.

Now that many other applications support it (most importantly Plex), I've found it to be useful for our bedroom TVs that previously had a Raspberry Pi connected to them.

I ended up getting an Apple TV and haven't regretted the decision. It cost 3 times as much, but seems to be worth the price.

My local Staples has them (new) for $30. I'm assuming a clearance sale.

A Chromecast wouldn't be the device under my home TV, but it is a great device for the road.

I just pack a long HDMI cord.

Bigger issue though is that hotel Wifi is really poor. There are more upsets now, where you get basic speeds for free but to have any decent speeds, you have to pay extra.

In some properties my ATT, Boingo, or elite status gets me upgraded wifi. Additionally, I have downloaded movies. I use a Mac and wish Apple had a dongle version of its Apple TV -- particularly now that it can connect without a public wifi connection.

I am thinking about this device, but the reviews are mixed:

I am interested in this as much for PowerPoints (Keynotes).
