I guess you have not been walking around Bangkok , with a million motorbikes , many driving down the sidewalk the wrong direction , Taxis trying to weave thru traffic with their horns etc....
Its a mad world sometimes and its better to be able to hear some of it

To be perfectly honest, it does not matter what you buy. Since Apple dominated the market there is no one else making an MP3 player that's really worth owning. They've all got really limited software/interfaces or are of low quality. The biggest thing with Apple's devices is the fact that they work extremely well and are completely ubiquitous.
Despite the "no Apple" requirement I'd say take a second look. The iPod nano is hard to beat for $150...16gb, 30 hours of audio playback on a charge, very compact, the best GUI of any MP3 player, and iTunes really isn't that painful.

Thinking a little outside the box, you could use one of these as an mp3 player. Good battery life with the cell connection and wifi switched off.

Yep! My favorite MP3 player is a galaxy gen 1 phone my sister threw away when she upgraded. It has bluetooth to send music directly to my car stereo and my home speakers with the logitec bluetooth receiver. And of course it can be used with a wired headset. Lastly, it's unlocked by tmobile so I can even throw a SIM card in it and use it as a phone when traveling if I want!

Having said that, I agree that the mp3 market is pretty poor. None of them seem much better than the Sansa e250 I have now. The clip zip looks ok, but the menu is so small to read. The others are just as big!
So, as Doc Savage suggested, I have started looking at used smart phones. An added benefit is that I really could use a GSM phone for my Europe travels (especially GPS!) and if I could find a reasonably priced android with gps and 4.0, maybe it is worth a little investment. But I am really worried about battery life on something like that, and size, too.

My e280 still lives, although it seems to reboot every time i turn it on. Still works, just have to wait 30-40 seconds or so before i can actually listen to anything.

Yes, iTunes IS that painful. Especially the newer interface. I want something I can just use like a usb device.

The smartphone thing poses the two problems you mentioned - battery life and size.
I ended up researching MP3 players out of curiosity after reading through this (as I haven't used anything other than an iPod Classic or an iPhone in half a decade) and came up empty handed for anything satisfying all the requirements. Samsung has the GalaxyPlayer 4.2, which is huge but, it may satisfy the rest of the requirements and has a claimed 60 hour battery life along with GPS (though that may need wifi to function).

I looked at that. You need Wifi for the navigation to work in a functional manner. You can cache the maps, but it doesn't really do much for your actual navigation.
But, for the price of a new Galaxy Player, for a little more I can get an el cheapo unlocked actual phone, which still gives me all the android apps, the same navigation, but then I do have the phone capability too. Of course now we are talking a couple hundred dollars, all to listen to music on the plane.

I am leaning more and more towards a phone. It's time I started using my own phone instead of my work phone for travel, although it might be a pain carrying two devices around. I decided to start a new thread on that here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...errerid=148394
