What I can say is that I love the Airport Express and I'd be shocked if other vendors can make something work and Apple can't. The whole point of the AX was using it in hotels!

If you're traveling with an iPad it has to be your first option. The music streaming is also a wicked feature, tho you prob don't use it on the road.

If you're a real road warrior, shame on you for not getting a iPad 3G in the first place to just avoid all the wifi mumbo-jumbo.
It is not possible without an AirPort Extreme base station, or by using WDS (I'm not sure if that is the correct initials), which only works with some routers, and its an old way of doing it. If you know some new way just post a link. We can read up on it.

I have an iPad 2 with WIFI only, but I use a 4G Mobile Hotspot with it now. It only costs me $20 a month extra for it. That was my solution when I realized I wasted money on the Airport Express.

Either way, Cradlepoint routers are great, and any model capable of WiFi as WAN should do the trick for the OP.
Not sure... I bought mine in September 2011 and it came with WiFi as Wan out of the box.

That is what the D-Link I posted does. Plus it configures over WiFi so no wires are ever needed.

Can you just use a normal router and turn it into access point mode, hook it up to the wired connection, so that you can reach the hotel's login screen?

You can, but most normal routers are at least the size of a paperback book and require a power brick. My Asus 303 is a tad bigger than a pack of chewing gum and is powered off usb.

It is a fantastic travel accessory - just wish they'd employ some decent software people to improve the user interface.
