The key here is going to be the frequencies your prospective networks use.

I'm not an expert, but I think 850 and 1900 are not widely used outside of North America... unsure on the 2100.

The quadband 2G coverage gives you lots of options, but at slower speeds.

I defer to the TT experts who should be along shortly...

I agree. Make sure you are compatible with the local provider, but there are very few providers on 1700mhz or 3g providers on 900mhz. 1700mhz is used in about five countries in the world. 900mhz is so overrun with 2g that most carriers are not trying to put 3g on that frequency yet, though I'm sure that some people will post the exceptions.
