The bottom line is that in some areas, there is a real possibility unlocked iPhone owners could pick up pockets of 3G signal. Its not going to be a scenario we see playing out all over the country, in fact its probably going to be pretty rare with lots of emphasis on rare. Were not quite sure exactly what T-Mobile is up to, we do know HSPA+ 84 is currently in testing and we might learn some kind of launch time frame at CES in January. Until then, well keep trying to figure out T-Mobiles spectrum plans and see what other kind of hidden mysteries we can uncover.

officially, at&t does not support iphones, but they will work, including data. you must activate it on something else and swap the sim. you might need to use a custom apn, but that's easy to do.
at&t will check for a smartphone on normal postpaid accounts and 'upgrade' your plan if they see an iphone or other smartphone, but gophone is not swept.

i don't use that much data so maybe i fly under the radar, but i've been using an iphone on gophone for 3.5 years and never had that happen.

An AT&T Sim (not locked to a specific Gophone bundled package) do and should work on a properly configured iphone (best to be jailbreaked & unlocked) so that APN & other settings can be changed as needed.

To setup a new Gophone account, just use all zeros as IMEI and/or an old GSM "dumb" phone - once it's activated and funds added, boot up the phone & sim once and setup for online account management. Once completed, you can move that Sim card & associated phone # to another device, including one's smartphone (and iPhone/ipad, etc. .... by use of micro-sim cutter) and you need to "buy" the data bundle @ 10MB, 100MB or 500MB for $25.
There's nothing in the Gophone T.O.S. to prohibit one from using the "i"s for data - and I moved my Gophone Sim card around as needed when I travel, it's a matter of knowing & changing the configurations & profiles.
Same is true for T-Mo prepaid, and the new $3 per day voice, text & data plan is good for many - especially welcomed to smartphone users. iphone/ipad users might not get the full speed experienced due to different radio bands used on their network. The HoFo prepaid forum T-Mo geeks has the latest info & helpful tips.

I wonder if the data block would affect an ATT branded HTC Atria Android phone - and if there is a workaround for it without rooting.
