I have an AT&T iPhone 4 and will be in Guatemala for a couple weeks without wi-fi access for days at a time. I really want the ability to have data access for important e-mails but don't want to pay AT&T $60 for only 50MB and the possibility of going over.

I've considered the option of unlocking my phone for the trip ... is there a way I can get pre-paid data in Guatemala with one of the native providers (I see Tigo as an option)?

I wouldn't even mind having a laptop option if that's the case (I see something about a USB dongle...) but would really prefer an iPhone option.

Let's assume that even a cheap prepaid option would be at least $10. A USB dongle rental would probably be more. You're willing to get your iPhone unlocked, and/or carry a laptop for two weeks in order to save $50?

Obviously, it's your decision to make, and I'm not questioning your judgment or situation if $50 really is a deal-breaker or that otherwise really is the best situation for you. I mention this just because I've seen a lot of people go to great personal inconvenience and disrupt their travel a lot just to avoid paying a $50 or $100 fee that they think is too high, and not considering how this affects the rest of their trip and all the money that is being paid for it.

I think others are giving bad advice. It's easy to get phones unlocked, and then you will have it available not only for this trip, but for other future ones.

Go ahead and get the cheaper roaming option, if you need to use it, but if you can, definitely buy TIGO SIM. And 125 MB is nothing. In two weeks, you will probably use 500 MB, which means 200 USD for the roaming option. But do check TIGO's pre-paid data rates before you decide -- sometimes they are not that much cheaper.

It's more than $50 -- unlimited usage for ~$10 vs. 50MB for $60 (at the time I posted). At the time, data overage was $5/MB.
I will have a laptop with me anyway so carrying a laptop for 2 weeks isn't something I'm not doing already.


With the new rates, I will probably just have to go with the 125MB for $50. I'm not going to be having heavy phone usage during this trip, just need access to manual e-mail fetch (for an email account where about 98% of emails will be important to me).

I'm glad they reduced the rates per MB on these new plans but I still think they can do better. One great thing is they severely reduced the overage rate - $10 for 10MB is way better than $5 for 1MB.

Can I access the MYAT&T app from abroad? Just in case I need to upgrade to the 250MB plan while there ...
