Exclamation AT&T to buy T-Mobile

AT&T Agrees to Buy Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile USA Unit for $39 Billion

I hope it doesn't get approved... Last thing we need is a monopoly on the GSM spectrum..

Maybe next AT&T will merge with Verizon and then we can finish the circle of deregulation.

BOOO!

I am not happy. I hope the DoJ does not let this one through, but I highly doubt that will happen. I guess as long as I can keep my awesome T-Mobile plan I will be OK with it.

I don't believe any TMO customer is happy about this

If the DOJ approves this, they might as well cease to exist.

This is horrible for competition.

Bad news for consumers. Tmobile is one of the cheaper carriers

I'm on a granfathered Alltel plan on Verizon. If I were to get the same plan today on Verizon, I would have to pay ~$30 more. Not to mention additional for data and whatnot.

Some additional analysis here

T-Mobile is known for the industry’s best customer service and lowest prices, although the latter is likely to change as contracts expire and customers are faced with a choice of only the more expensive AT&T plans.

Wouldn’t the FTC have to approve it before moving to the DOJ? Regardless, we have two Government agencies that can stop this..

I think this is a move by T-Mobile to get Sprint to pony up more cash for a takeover..

Bad for consumers in general but as an exTMobile customer good riddance. They haven't seemed interested in attracting or keeping customers for the past several years.

As an AT&T user in NYC I would love to

- Get access to UMA. But I think this will go away, to the mircocell
Not a fan of those.

- The 1700 band (AT&T does not have enough spectrum in the major metropolitan areas to support excellent service quality)

That said, the lawyers and ibankers on this deal made a killing, I'm sure.

Typically only one of FTC and DOJ reviews an acquisition. They have a process for deciding which of the two reviews.

Highly unlikely. They signed a definitive agreement with AT&T

Deutsche Telekom probably could have put together a deal to take Sprint over but they clearly didn't want to (they did do due diligence on this, however, two years ago).

Too many issues, most revolving around the incompatible network technology.

Bad news. The ONLY reason I've kept a blackberry on TMo is international roaming and TMo being the only carrier that still offers a flat international email plan for the BB. Time to move totally over to VZ or Sprint.

I assume none of you post in Omni/PR as conservatives who support the free market.

I don't think I posted anything with respect to the acquisition or the free market (nor do I post my political leanings....). I merely stated what my actions would be should this deal be approved & closed.

I've lived through one ATT transition where they cut service until we were forced off the old plans - that's why I don't have personal service on ATT any more.
