Consider GoPhone

You can buy a cheap AT&T SIM on ebay for about $3. So, if it expires, you're out $3.

They now have a $2 per day unlimited calling and text plan, charged only on the days you use the SIM. Hard to beat that. So, if you are here for 5 days, you can get unlimited calls & SMS for $10 plus the cost of the SIM.

Also, any tips on where its best to buy one of these in the NYC area..??

TMO has a coverage map: check it out for specific locations.
TMO also has store locators - make sure you go only to their own stores as the resellers don't sell just the sim card [they sell combo with phone]

T-Mo Prepaid finally has $1.49 Web Day Pass for smartphones

Good news for us with unlocked smartphones (WinMo, BB & Android OS, etc.) with occassional data access needs, T-Mo's newly revised prepaid plan offering a Web Day Pass for $1.49 only on the Pay As You Go plan. A $10 starter/refill voucher is good for 5 days with some credit remaining for some voice calls. A Week Pass (7 days) for Mobile Broadband is $10 with a 100MB cap (AT&T Gophone's 100MB "Feature Package" is $19.99 but good for 30 days)

I have 2 grandfathered T-Mo PBTD (Pay By The Day) sim with Gold Status and this is exceptionally good for me (PBTD no longer available for new prepaid customers.)

Just google & checkout the T-Mobile website for all the details and/or checkout dedicated posts at howardforums(.)com under T-Mo Prepaid section for all the latest discussion hot topics about this, users with HTC, BB & traditional Windows Mobile phones are all reporting success on signing up for the Day Pass & using it. No more outrageous hotel surcharges for broadband access when it's not included in their rates or scramble for a wifi/hotspot on the go.

Enjoy & have fun with it.
