On Windows - DVD Fab, but I don't think it is free. It works on almost everything and has built in profiles for pretty much any device you many want.
On Mac - Handbreak, no question.

Do a google search.
DVD Shrink isn't a good candidate for a ripper as it often gets stuck on the newer DVD's. No idea for Handbrake for Mac but it's the same story for Handbrake for Windows.

I've been using DVD Decrypter for a year or so, and it has worked on most DVDs I wanted to do a backup for.
I have purchased DVD Fab (DVD to DVD option) but currently use only the decrypting part. It has worked with all the DVDs that DVD Decrypter could not rip. So, that is quite an improvement for me.
Nevertheless, there's something I find odd when ripping a full DVD, there is no option to extract to a single file, and the software splits the result into 1GB files, which would not be a problem, IF the order of audio streams (I use at least English, French, director's comments) did not sometimes change from one file to the next. Any thoughts ?

AnyDVD + Handbrake do a fantastic job, especially if you have iOS devices. Works flawlessly on low powered netbooks as well.
@JOUY31 -- which app is splitting the file into 1GB chunks? Decrypter or DVD Fab?
