Electronics on during take-off and landing...

Maybe some of you can either change or reinforce my thoughts on this subject. In my recent travels, I've noticed more and more people deciding to leave their electronics on during take-off and landing.

I find it both concerning and frustrating. Typically I'll see people sleeping with their active noise cancellation head phones on, and at times I'll see people with their Iphones left on, and in one case a person was texting while still landing!

From a safety perspective, I'm not sure just how dangerous this practice is, but it's a bit disconcerting.

That brings the question, should someone point it out when a person decides to ignore the rules? AFAIK there is a federal penalty for keeping electronics on and can be prosecuted by the court of law. I'd just want the person to comply, would hate to get into some legal situation.

I've never heard of such a case, but wonder if such a thing could happen.

Finally, I have to wonder since there are plenty of electronics that are left on that don't have on off switches. Such as quartz watches, lcd sets on the plane itself and I'm sure people accidentally forget to turn off items left in a bag.

What's everyone's take on this scenario?

It's more likely than not one of those "because I say so" type of things. It doesn't matter if there's no real or practical reason. Of course people leave their electronics including their mobile phones on for the entire duration of flights and nothing bad has happened.

If you can point me to a good thread, I'd be more than happy.

Video cameras and the cockpit

Clearly, having a video camera on inside the cockpit during flight and landing interferes with the instruments as documented in this video:

Great find! In my opinion, the rule against electronics on takeoff and landing is just one of those "lets be prepared" rules. There has been no incident blamed completely on passengers cell phones or electronics.

Fixed that for you. This is the more accurate statement.

I agree. They don't allow cell phones for the whole duration of the flight but allow laptops and other devices. They should just not allow everything turned on during take off and landing but allow all including cell phones in between.
